Since 15th of Novembre connecting to ICQ fails with "Error: Unknown" reason on the account manager. No error on the error console. Fails with both SSL and without it. Enabling clientLogin brings up a different error message but I'm not sure if it worked before, so ignoring this for now.
Existing connections to ICQ are still working, reconnecting after disconnect fails though (i.e. locked out).
I saw this on Windows XP SP3 and Ubuntu 9.10.

I can reproduce this error with Pidgin as well, maybe something on the protocol was changed and we need an update. Couldn't find anything on Pidgin's Trac yet.

tymerkaev point out the probem: the login server was changed from login.messaging.aol.com to login.icq.com
After changing it on the account options and disabling SSL ("handshake failed" error), it is working again. Thanks a lot.
We should include this change as soon as possible.

Confirmed as an issue on 0.2 as well. This should be back ported.

To fix the issue:
1. Open the account manager ("Tools" > "Accounts")
2. Select your IRC account and click "Properties"
3. On the "Advanced Options" tab change the "Server" to "login.icq.com" and deselect "Use SSL"

Adium discussion about it: http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22834&sid=e56d3b94a0f337e49d37a4b9a5400076#p127686
Apparently "slogin.icq.com" should work with SSL but isn't yet.

Of course I meant ICQ in step 2, not IRC.

Also for step 3, deselect "Use clientLogin".

This was fixed in one of our libpurple updates (implement in 2.7.5, I think it was when we went to 2.7.10).
See Pidgin changelog: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog
or http://developer.pidgin.im/query?status=closed&milestone=2.7.5
Marking as fixed, we should file a follow up if there's an issue with prefs. Pidgin users' servers were silently migrated, does that apply to us as well?

We are still on 2.7.9.

I don't think we need to care about this. If users haven't changed the default values of the prefs, we have nothing to do. And if they did, they will most likely be able to find and fix themselves any issue caused by their changes.
