Filtering the participants list would be great for channels with hundreds or thousands of users. Instead of having to scroll through the list looking for someone, you could open a search bar (or maybe it could be open all the time, like on the log viewer?) that allows to incrementally search/filter the participants list.

Maybe another button would allow to filter accoring to a minimum (?) mode/status of users, e.g. displaying only people with voice 'or better status', same for half-operatoer, ...

We could have a star (similar to bug 954034 (bio 597) discussion) to swap through filtering. The Thunderbird "Quick filter toolbar" or whatever it's called might be something good to look at (although it's rather large). It's nice that it has a lot of options and can be hidden, but isn't another window that pops up.
