Provide customisable mail notifications in buddy list.

The customisation aspect should be how many characters of an email are displayed in the preview.

Users should have the ability to have previews displayed in the buddy list or in a separate window after being notified via a bar or icon on the buddy list.

Another idea would be to display the previews in a tab on the buddy list, that way, you could simply highlight the tab when you have new mail.

In terms of the basic feature. I know that Pidgin currently support something similar.

I like the application button menus. They seem quite intuitive and do what they should. The problem is with the other version. The buddy window is usually not that wide so with menus with such long names it's going to be awful. You have to find something to get this right if we are even to consider this.

I'm really sorry, I messed up my tabs. My previous comment should be for bug #954068 (bio 632). For this one I don't have any comment right now. Alerts do seem to take a lot of space though...

No worries. I thought the alerts could be wrapped if the user wanted the window thinner. I generally keep my window at about that width.

Ah no, I was not talking about the width of the window for the space of alerts. I wanted to say that maybe we could find some other formulation that would convey as much but with less words.

Just seen http://log.bezut.info/instantbird/110205/#m29

I forgot to confirm the bug, but I thought "[0.3-nice-to-have]" in the status whiteboard made it relatively obvious that email notifications (not necessarily exactly as proposed in the first 3 comments here, but probably somewhere in the buddy list) is something we want.
Sorry for the confusing.

It's too late to start working on this for 0.3.

I certainly agree on this bug. I hate to piggy-back with an opinion that may be different from the original author, so hoping we are on the same page... This could simply be a notification and not let instantbird become a mail reader. Hovering over the notification could show the time, sender and subject of the email. Clicking on it then routs you to your email on the web.

I would also think it would be fine to plant such notification in the statusbar area of the contact list window.
On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
