Users of MSN Plus can use common BB tags to format the text of their nicknames. In Instantbird, the tags are not formatted and are displayed. For instance I currently have a friend with the name:
[c=28]Camylle[/c]
This appears in the buddy list and in the coversation tabs. I propose that the tags be stripped out so only the buddy name is shown with no formatting. Formatting could be problematic as it would disturb the appearance of buddy names in the buddy list as well as the text color indicators in the tabs. This seems to be the approach used by both Pidgin and Adium:

I also found an Adium extension that strips them out, may be useful?

This is apparently fixed and checked in. Although it seems like we'd need to write a function to strip out the tags (which isn't very difficult I don't think). Anyway, marking this as confirmed.

On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
