When in a MUC, there would be a way to recall a list of previous entered commands with a short cut such as Ctrl+Up/Down. This can become a useful feature for file transfers and other common command by not having to reenter or copy past a previous commands, just Ctrl+Up/Down and then modify what was entered.

Currently you can get back previous things you said by pressing Ctrl+z. Could be useful to have a real history though.

There is an add-on for this (it is not restricted to commands though): https://addons.instantbird.org/en-US/instantbird/addon/278
Therefore resolving as "Worksforme", especially considering comment #2. If there is a good argument why this should be in the core, please reopen.

(I hesitated between WORKSFORME and WONTFIX, but Ctrl-Z suggests the former)

Ctrl-Z is a (convenient) bug. We should have a supported way to do this.

I looks as of 1.2 all the functionality it there now. Ctrl-Y goes forward in the history and Ctrl-Z goes backwards in history. What's even better now is that saves what you last typed, so if you are in the middle of a message and pressed the Ctrl-z and then Ctrl-y to redo, it will go back to where you last were.
I guess my justification for the original request is that do a lot of linux putty session's windows command prompt sessions and it's more convenient to use the arrow keys to go through the history. Also if I may make an amendment to the first post. Ideally IMO it would be even better not to have to press the ctrl.
Because it looks like the functionality is now it place, this might be a better option for a add-on to remap the Ctrl-z and ctrl-y to use the arrow keys?

Yes, an add-on could do this - as the default we want the arrow keys to scroll the conversation (from the empty input box).
