*** Original post on bio 899 by Derek Balling <dredd AT megacity.org> at 2011-07-07 11:55:00 UTC *** One nice feature of iChat is that it will auto-dealias your buddies' instant messenger IDs to their real names. So you might have an Apple Address Book Entry for "John Doe" which has an instant-messenger screen-name mapping of "johndoe2011(AIM)" associated with it. When the iChat buddy list seens "johndoe2011" it displays it as "John Doe" since it can get that information programmatically from the Address Book. It seems like this should be a fairly low-hanging fruit type enhancement that would make users' lives a lot easier, rather than having to go through and manually alias a couple dozen or more screen names.
*** Original post on bio 899 at 2011-07-07 12:04:13 UTC *** In addition, if multiple screennames/buddies/what-have-you are available in the address book (that are also in the buddy list) they should automatically be grouped into a contact. According to dballing the address book supports at least: AIM, ICQ, Jabber, MSN and Yahoo. comm-central [1] contains some OS X address book linking code. Check under nsAbOSX*.*, it's possible some of this could be leveraged. [1] http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mailnews/addrbook/src/

Ever confirmed: true
On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
