Summary says it all, preferably by protocol (or by conversation if possible).

It definitely doesn't. Especially, which configuration options are needed and why? (for what is worth, there's already a hidden preference for always closing conversations rather than putting them on hold).

Sometimes one may not want to keep a single IRC channel open on an account with multiple channels, sometimes someone may want to close another protocol's chat while keeping it "on hold" so he can come back with the log still there.

You can right click > Close conversation currently. (Just in case you missed it.)

Sounds like this is resolved then? If not, please reopen the bug. However, finer-grained controls over when to put conversations on hold and when to close them would probably be best implemented in an add-on.
