It's confusing to see so many log items when I prefer to close the conversation window after I send my message.
I suggest to sort the history by whole days.

I believe each item is shown separately as they're meant to represent a separate "conversation", but being able to look at a day a time could be useful, I guess. I think similar suggestions are done in bug 953735 (bio 292) (although that still uses the time to separate conversations).

Confirming this bug, in the sense that "currently the log viewer often shows way to many little snippets of conversations that belong together separately". So it's an empirical problem that needs some sort of solution...

This has been done for TB and is part of bug 955162 (bio 1732) now.

I don't think bug 955162 (bio 1732) fixes the problem here, it will just hide it.

The problem is that some users are used to closing the conversation window after each message (I've seen WLM users do that several times), but even though the conversation has been closed and reopened, it's still the same conversation (from a user point of view).

So a real fix for the bug here would possibly be to put hide the conversation (like putting it on hold, but not visible at all in the UI) instead of closing it when a tab is closed, and to actually close the conversation only after a few minutes.

Reopening per flo's comment.

On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
