I miss an ability to search contact by name. It is not necessary to have "normal" search, jumping through contacts beginning by specific character while pressing it on keyboard repeatedly would be enough. 
Also, the "jumping through" feature would be a bit useless without fixing Bug 954564 (bio 1131) - using cursors for moving in contacts up and down.

I think he means typing and just selecting the buddy as you type, which isn't really the same as filtering.

Yes, I mean that, but if developers will implement such functionality, they have to choose this or the filtering described in bug 954067 (bio 631) .

Having both at the same time seems useles, while it would be possible (normally cycling through contacts described here and by e.g. Ctrl+F or choosing menu item start filtering). But still it would be spending time on something that is no longer needed.

I assume filter would be more usefull for people with hundreds of contacts. The way of search I describe, which means just highlighting the contact, would be good enough for people with ~50-100 contacts...

Let the developers decide what to do ;)

A good example that does this is Windows Explorer, if you start typing it attempts to make filenames. Confirming as a separate bug from bug 954067 (bio 631).

I also request this feature.

In addition to the postings above I suggest that a search in the chat IDs is also possible.
Means: I can search for the name "Steve" or also enter the ICQ ID 1234567.
This works for all protocols (I also can enter email addresses).

This works for me: I'm able to start typing a contact's name and they get highlighted in my contact list.
