954608 - Renaming merged contact and renames all of its "subcontacts" and cannot rename a subcontact

Renaming metacontact causes all its subcontacts to be renamed too. Also, it is not posible to rename a subcontact individually (only by separating it, renaming and joining to the metacontact again).

Having the same name for all contact in a metacontact is confusing especially if you have more contacts for the person on single protocol.

I think this is working as expected, if you rename a contact, would you expect all it's subcontacts to have that same name? I agree if you have multiple contacts for that person with the same protocol it can be confusing, but I'm not sure of a "better" way to handle this. What information are you trying to get out that you feel is now "missing"? Is the issue on the contact list? In conversations?

The current behavior is annoying in at least 2 cases:
- when there are several buddies of the same protocol in the contact (mentioned in comment 0)
- when the buddies have a server alias (set by the contact) that contains some message. That's typically the case on MSN.

When renaming a contact, renaming all subcontacts is ok. What bothers me is that it is no longer possible to rename those subcontacts separately when merged in one contact.

Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
