For when you return to IB to discover you have been pinged (because the tab is highlighted accordingly), so you can scroll to this ping by pressing a single key.

Is this wanted?

Should this only be possible once? (i.e. the section forgotten after you have scrolled to it)

What happens if you were pinged multiple times? Would each ping be added to the sections or the most recent one replace earlier?

I've read the summary again and I think I know the answer already ;)

Yes, I think remembering all previous pings gets confusing to the user as section scroll becomes unpredictable to use (say I want to scroll to the first unread message - why aren't I seeing it after pressing Home? How often do I need to press it? A potential extra press is understandable, n extra presses is a pain).

Having an easy way to find the last pings (or all unread pings, or even any ping) is definitely wanted. I'm not so sure about the solution proposed here though.

I tend to think it should use a different key/key modifier than the simple section scroll, as it would be quite surprising otherwise; but I guess I could be convinced otherwise.

Isn't looking for pings quite similar to what we do with the findbar when looking for the next match? could we somehow use the findbar (and its keyboard shortcuts!) to navigate between pings?

Yes, as soon as you expect to have more than one ping you want to look for, it's a lot more like search. In fact it would be exactly search if it wasn't for the nicks appearing in each message as the sender...
