This is something we discussed this week while looking at bug 955249 (bio 1816) but I don't think we filed a bug for it, and I need a place to attach my WIP so that we don't lose it.

The WIP I'm attaching is completely untested.

I'm also wondering if this could have bad consequences for Thunderbird. Maybe we should take the default value of the messenger.options.emoticonsTheme preference instead of hardcoding "default".

Bug 1658648 removed emoticon themes and replaced them with unicode.
