Sometimes you are chatting to someone in an IRC channel and have a discussion that you want to archive. However, copying and pasting directly from the chat window leaves in all sorts of control messages and messages from other people, which you have to manually remove. And every line may have a timestamp.

I propose an "Extract Conversation With..." feature, which would work like this.

* Right-click the username of a user (not yourself)
* Select "Extract Conversation With..."

In the simplest form, this would copy to the clipboard as plain text and HTML all chat lines spoken by you or the other person in the current channel in the last <period> of time, with an initial "Conversation began at <date>:" line and then the per-line timestamps removed.

This would be suitable for pasting into an email message, wiki page or other more permanent archiving form.

There are many ways this could be made more complex. You could bring up a preview window of the output, which allowed you to add additional participants, and format the result.

Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
