These semantics annotations are used to attach alternate representation (typically LaTeX) to MathML equations. This is helpful for copy and paste (bug 539506) or to provide fallback for non-standard-compliant browsers (https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/details/812595/add-some-css-rules-to-select-mathml-annotations-and-alttext, https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=324764).

Someone reported a long time ago that these elements do not work on Planet Mozilla:

http://www.maths-informatique-jeux.com/blog/frederic/?post/2013/01/22/Analysis-of-Lithium-s-algorithm#c142

This was raised recently in a MathML meeting and Jacques Distler mentioned

https://github.com/distler/venus/commit/fdb788e798b58b92eec9f0a85eb53d7682f7fd8e

but I don't know exactly when it will be merged to the main Planet Venus branch and available on planet.mozilla.org

@Jacques: have you tried to submit a pull request with your improvements to the "official" Planet Venus?
