We want to ship Firefox Mobile with a good list of search engines for Hindi.

We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and the l10n drivers will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Rajesh, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Productization_guide>.

For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives:

> Google (mobile version), Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, Twitter, Wikipedia (slightly different to desktop, 32x32 icon)

We may also want to go with just a subset of the en-US engines, if that's more appropriate for the local market.

Once we decide to use a particular search engine (and we test it on a mobile device), l10n drivers will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. Rajesh, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information.

For search engines that we already ship with on desktop and that you would like to include in mobile as well, the permission is not needed. Consider using a mobile version of the engine if one is available. Also, please make yourself familiar with instructions regarding the <Description/> element at <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Integrated_Search_Instructions>. For mobile, we'll want 64x64 size images, too.

Once we have a specification on what the search engines for Hindi should look like, flod (Francesco Lodolo) and the localization team will work on an implementation on that. flod will create and attach patches for the desired changes and get them reviewed. After a successful review, flod will land them. Rajesh, if you're interested, you could create the patches, too. You'd ask flod for review on those before landing.

Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by flod, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by the l10n drivers. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.

The Hindi team and flod will be driving this bug to completion.
A good discussion happened for Firefox Hindi one, a better reference:

Hi Rajesh,

That bug's scope is much larger than this one, and there are some different considerations that need to be made (e.g., is the search engine customized for mobile?). In addition, you will need to reach out to the regional providers to ensure that they have the bandwidth to handle the extra traffic. Could you please identify a specific list within this bug according to the specifications outlined in the description?

Thanks
Hi Jeff,

The list (proposed) can go like this:

Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikipedia, Flipkart, e-bay Amazon, YouTube, facebook, Twitter, Kavita Kosh, Hindi Samay

All you know except the last two. The last two are the archives of Hindi literary writings and its continuously growing and I got few suggestions in favour of having this type of content especially for Hindi.

Please suggest!

Thanks!
Some notes:
* Facebook is not an option, since you need to be registered to search.
* The list definitely needs to be shortened: 6, maybe 7 searchplugins is the average we ship. For that purpose, it would make sense to chose one for each area (e.g. Amazon, eBay, Flipkart seem all to be e-commerce related).
* I don't think we ship Youtube for any locale, but the experience would be probably far from great on mobile.
Thanks!

Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikipedia, Flipkart, Twitter, Hindi Samay

Please check the above list. Hope it is fine.
I checked Firefox desktop, and you're not currently shipping Flipkart or Hindi Samay.

This means that you need to get in touch with these providers, explain to them what we're planning to do, ask them which parameters we need to use in the search query and to provide icons (ideally 32px, 64px, 256px).

But let's wait for Jeff's opinion before doing any of this.

Yeah, that sounds good to me.

Rajesh, please feel free to CC me on your emails to the providers if you think it will help to get responses.

Thanks!

Hi Rajesh,

Have you received a response from either Flipkart or Hindi Samay?

No Jeff! Please let me know what we should do in this situation?

We have time to wait (see the email I sent about Firefox 31). Perhaps it will be good to send a second email in the next week or two.
Hey flod, what do you think we should do here if we don't hear back from these two? Ask Rajesh to make different selections and file a separate bug to add these when he finally hears from them?
If the target version if Firefox 31 (comment 12), we still have a bit of time since we won't land these until next cycle on Aurora.

If we can't get any answer, we should proceed with

Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikipedia, Twitter

And add Flipkart + Hindi Samay in follow-ups as soon as we get what we need.
So let's wrap this up. I should add that we've recently learned that all Fennec locales need to include Bing and Yahoo. This is in order to promote more diversity in the search options and provde a better, more comprehensive user experience. I see that Yahoo is already on the list, can I propose this alternative to include Bing? Please let me know what you think:

1. www.google.com (WebSearch: mobile version)
2. www.bing.com (WebSearch)
3. www.yahoo.com (WebSearch)
4. www.twitter.com
5. hi.wikipedia.org (Specific Interest: Hindi Wikipedia)

Rajesh, many of the other Indic locales have asked to add www.amazon.in (Amazon India E-commerce)
www.ebay.in (Ebay India E-commerce). The current list is missng an e-commerce site. Do you want to add these to Hindi for e-commerce?
Assignee: nobody → francesco.lodolo
As no one responded from the two mentioned flipkart/hindi samaya so we should leave those. We can add www.amazon.in
Ok, so the list would be

google
bing
yahoo-in
twitter
wikipedia-hi
amazon-in

Does it sound good?
