This happens on Windows, Mac and Linux.
This started happening many months ago. I thought I had filed a bug and had not heard back.
Just in case I didn't file it.
I'm on the latest nightly. I currently used Linux.
BTW I've tried resetting my profile to no avail.
This sounds similar to bug 487979 and bug 486237.
I see that someone had to disable an add-on and it got fixed. Let me try that.
STR:
* start typing in the location bar
* type 1 character at a time slowly
** you will see a list of suggested pages or searches
* keep on going until you notice that it is showing you an empty list
** adding or removing one character will make things work

NOTE: You don't have to type slowly to trigger this bug

Well, it seems that it was DuckDuck Go Plus.
Reported to them.
