User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20131115105349

Steps to reproduce:

Goto http://demo.siteorigin.com/origami/
Scroll to the post "Content That Will Rock Your World".
Hope that the issue will appear for you.

The issue does not appear at the post's url. This being a text issue it could also be specific to Ubuntu 13.10's text layout engine.

Actual results:

Every ~7 seconds the top row of text in the right column switches to the bottom of the left column. That is to say the text reflows itself so that an extra line fits on the bottom of the left column.

I have attached three screenshots showing what it looks like from my end.

Expected results:

The text should not be toggling between columns.
Confirmed
Retested on bugday-20140120]
On 29.0a1 (2014-01-20) Windows 7 64 bit the issue does not appear
On 29.0a1 (2014-01-20) Vista the issue is confirmed.
Seeing similar issue on OS X 10.9.1 (13B42). Version Firefox 26.0. Though, (and I'm not sure they are the same version) Funnelcake build seems to be fine.

WFM on current Nightly. Is this issue still up for you?
Flags: needinfo?(danieru.dressler)
Just tested on Ubuntu 14.04 with the nightly ppa, the reflow issue still persists.

What platform are you on? I expect the issue is restricted to atleast linux.
Flags: needinfo?(danieru.dressler)
I'm using exactly the same platform, but no column switching here.
Please make sure that your software is up to date and you're using a clean profile.
I had tested it on a laptop where Ubuntu had only been installed a week ago then hardly used, with a fresh install of nightly from ppa.

If you are not getting the toggling that is good but since I was able to reproduce it both on my desktop and laptop (both x64) I'm not sure the bug has been fixed.
Product: Firefox → Core
I can confirm this. I'm running Windows 7 x64 and have the same issue with Firefox 33.1 and still exactly the same in 36.0a1 nightly. On that site, it only happens when the window is narrow enough to downsize that content, though. The same happens with -moz-column-width, too.

I made a simple test page here: http://www.gratissaugen.de/test/mozbug.html
My example does not switch without user interaction, though, but in the following cases:
It happens when I resize the browser window horizontally, eventhough the particular area has a fixed width.
And much worse, it also happens in conjunction with a hover shadow, which is really annoying when trying to "catch" a link.
The issue occurs whenever there is an odd number of lines in the multi-column area it seems.
Hi Daniel,

I am unable to reproduce with the following specs:
Mozilla/5.0 (x11; Linux x86_64; rv: 46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0
20160108030334

Are you still having this issue in newer versions of Firefox?
Flags: needinfo?(danieru.dressler)
For me, the hover effect is stable for a while now. The line jumping still happens during resizing the browser window, though. Just tried with 46.0a1 (2016-01-08) on Windows 10 x64. Again tested with this page: http://www.gratissaugen.de/test/mozbug.html
Hi,

I have tested this issue on latest Firefox (44.0) release and latest Nightly (47.0a1) release and managed to reproduce it. I have accessed the provided page by Daniel (http://demo.siteorigin.com/origami/) and every ~7 seconds the top row of text in the right column switches to the bottom of the left column, but this happens only on Linux. I tested this on Windows 7, 10, Vista and Mac OS but can not reproduce it.

Firefox: 44.0, Build ID: 20160123151951, User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0
Firefox: 47.0a1, Build ID: 20160128030208, User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0

I have managed to reproduce also the issue mentioned by mozbug14 in the above post, that seams to be related with the original. But his issue is reproducible on all operating systems. After I opened the provided test case when I resized the window the line started to jump between columns as reported.

Considering this, I will mark this issue as New and assign a component to it.

Thanks,
Cosmin

I cannot reproduce this bug via the testcase http://www.gratissaugen.de/test/mozbug.html in comment 9. mozrgression yields this range.

Bug 1423383 fixed this via enabling the new column frame hierarchy.
