Details
We need a tests for Versions as we have for milestones that assures that it behaves properly for all inputs in all situations.

There is nothing to test here. We have a validator for versions. That's all we need. If the validator doesn't do its job correctly, then it must simply be fixed.

without a test suite, how do we know if the validator is doing its job correctly?

As Sunil explained on IRC, he was talking about QA tests, not tests in t/. And QA tests already test versions, see test_edit_products_properties.t.
