I requesting this feature to be togglable in about:config at least as it's download animation (bug #861613), because it can be highly distracting for some people (me included).
Blocks: 931343
No longer depends on: 931343
Unless we make the animation happen also for other ways to bookmark (from the menu or shortcut) I don't think this may be "distracting" since you are clicking on the star. This is very different from the download finished animation, that could happen in your peripheral vision. Though, if we'd ever decide to animate in all of the above cases, then yes, a toggle may be wanted.
It's distracting in the way I browse the web and create the bookmarks. Let me told you how. I often open about 50-150 tabs in one window. Read them briefly one by one and move to another by TAB+CTRL. If some site was good or have too much content to read it now I simply add it to my bookmarks to re-read it fully later, and now this new bookmark animation starts to distracts me from the web content where I was still reading the site. I hope I make myself clearly to understand.
Whether it's distracting or not is pretty subjective. I found it a bit surprising but it does convey really well for a new user what just happened -- when you star a page, it is added into your bookmarks. mak, I leave it up to you whether you want to close this as wontfix, leave it as NEW or pass it on to whoever is making the design decisions. Virtual_ManPL, It sounds like there are no plans to make this toggle-able in the near future. Maybe this could be a good candidate for someone to write a Firefox Add-on.

I agree with comment #1. As this is only triggered via mouse action, the animation is not outside of the direct vision and is not unprovoked.
