Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140205162153

Steps to reproduce:

* Installed the touch Beta from the blog post link
https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2014/02/07/firefox-for-windows-8-touch-beta-is-ready-for-testing
* Set as default as it was not.
* tried launching from apps or start screen by typing Firefox

Actual results:

Desktop version runs

Expected results:

Modern version should have run.

I also tried exiting desktop version first in case for some reason only one instance will run.
On further investigation this bug could possibly be renamed "Firefox on Windows not behaving correctly as default browser"

What I find is that is it possible to manually switch between Desktop and Modern versions. On launch it uses the previous state.

What IE does when default browser is it launches the appropriate version, so when launched from the start screen you always get the Modern version, and when from desktop you always get the desktop version. Thus you can have 2 copies of IE running at once, desktop and modern.

When IE is NOT the default it behaves as Firefox which makes me wonder if Firefox is not quite handling default properly. That's assuming IEs behaviour is how the special dual mode of browsers is supposed to work.

When I last played with Firefox it would only run one instance unless you used the -noremotes option. Perhaps this is part of the issue

Did you try switching to metro mode from the fx menu option?

This the behavior we want. When you select one mode, we stick with it until you switch to the other.

Fair enough. I found it confusing based on prior experience IE which I think is reasonable given the dual nature of win 8. Either way makes sense once learnt and also works on Win RT.
