We have also discussed defaulting the list to display 'events near you' if geolocation is allowed. Beyond that, how do you envision this section working? Do you need UX for this?

Yep, there's a ticket for geolocation sorting by default. I think I've got the UX covered, but I'll let you know if I need anything!
