The margin between the Australis tabbar and the top of the titlebar appears to be too large on OSX. A symptom of this is that the FX-specific buttons (e.g. "+" for opening a new tab) are misaligned with the OSX window control buttons (e.g. the full-screen button, see screenshot). A similar effect is visible in the top left corner of the window. Apart from looking odd, this wastes a couple of pixels of vertical space.
There is intentionally space above the tabs because otherwise you wouldn't be able to drag the window. See also bug 887397, which complains about the exact opposite of what you're saying. The window controls are vertically centered between the top of the window and the top of the nav bar, which was a conscious design decision.

That would seem to be the expected tradeoff when drawing in the titlebar... but I'm not surprised to find this has already been argued over at length.
