This is wild speculation, so I half expect "don't be crazy" or "we already do that".
@mozilla.org/widget/idleservice;1 is the idle service. Components can register tasks (such as bookmark backups) to be performed on idle.

I also see a DOM interface, nsIIdleObserver. I don't know if these two things are linked.

We should run zero of these jobs during GeckoApp's lifecycle.
onPause, while the Gecko thread is still live, we should trigger idle, so these background jobs can run.
