Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140213235251

Steps to reproduce:

With message app i only can send sms and mms to my contacts, and i have to use an external app to send messages with other protocols.

Expected results:

Message app should become a centralized messaging app, where i write a message to a contact and i'm asked how to send that message, either with sms/mms or instant messaging protocols, with a possibility to define a priority list for sending the message (e.g. IM -> if fails/contact offline use email/sms/mms).

A plugin framework could help in implementing new protocols, so the message app wouldn't know how to send a message, because it would send the message data (content/metadata) to the chosen protocol plugin in order to deliver the message.

From this, making a sms/mms plugin (that takes message content and receivers numbers as input and delivery status as output) separated from message app can look overkill, but this way could lead to multiple protocol management with a single app. Just imagine that you open a conversation with someone and write something, and at sending you're prompted where to send the message (sms/mms/Facebook/Line/Whatsapp/Xmpp...), without the need of external programs.

As stated before in the example of sms plugin, an instant messaging plugin could output more metadata like online status and personal message, so Message could display a icon of online services in the conversations page so we can know that the contact is online.
Adding: Mozilla could provide a Xmpp relay service inside its Persona accounts, this way i just have to give my user@persona address to my contacts so they can message with me if they use a Xmpp service (this could help spreading Firefox Os phones a bit, you could message for free if someone have it), or even a Whatsapp-like phonenumber/account association.
I don't see this happening soon, so don't hold your breath ;)

It's just a tip about a imho useful feature, isn't important to have this in FFos 1.3/4 but one day, in a future version of the os... Again, it's more like a request for comment that request for implement.
Sorry, we just don't have the resource to work on this.
