977854 - Issue: Thunderbird is very slow opening messages with many addressees

Description

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/32.0.1700.107 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Upon receiving a message wtih many addressees (many email addresses in the to: or cc: fields), try to open this message, whether in the same pane or in a different pane.


Actual results:

There is a long delay before the message opens.


Expected results:

The message should open immediately. Whatever actions Thunderbird is taking should be differed for later. I am not sure what is taking that long. I deleted all my address books to see if it is a question of parsing/looking for emails in my address book. That did not help at all.

I have noticed this issue for a few years now. I have also tried to look for similar bugs. Although there are many reported problems, I didn't find this exact one.

Any other ideas I can try? Is it only me or is this a common problem?

bug 619493 and bug 693295 are bugs which can be relatively easily found by Advanced Search at B.M.O for "summary contains 'many && XXX'" where XXX is mail address related term such as To, CC, recipient.
Your case : XXX == address.

Same problem as bug 619493 or bug 693295(or many duped bugs, bugs listed in dependency tree)?
If different, what is difference of your problem?

It sounds the same except it happens with 30+ maybe 50+, I will have an easy way to find a way to count them.

The hanging is a few seconds.

It is unavoidable when the preview pane is configured. 

I do want to open these messages and read them.

The delay is the same when opened in a separate tab.

This is almost certainly bug 619493 or one of it's friends.  The slowness can happen at points <100 addresses, depending on the speed of your PC.

Also, you should test in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode
