We are launching a news marketplace newsletter. Until now Marketplace users were added to Firefox & You newsletter and were shown a widget with 3 featured apps.

The goal it to develop direct communication channels with Marketplace users, newsletter content will include app recommendations, new programs (community curation) and/or new feature announcements (Feed)

email frequency- a monthly newsletter 

Localization- initially to be mailed in ES and EN, and add more languages as needed.

We need to come up with a name to reflect the above.

This is assigned to Scott but would welcome feedback from Matej and team.

We don't need anything too clever or fancy here. Is there a reason we wouldn't use Firefox Marketplace Newsletter?

I'm also wondering what the plan for this newsletter will be, specifically who is going to be writing and editing it. Thanks.

Thanks, Matej. The plan is for Niran and I to pretty much run with this thing once we get it rolling. I can handle copy/content and Niran will support its publishing, segmentation, and so forth. 

I agree we don't need to get too clever with the name of this thing. Firefox Marketplace Newsletter might work fine. Maybe we also consider Firefox Marketplace Notes, Firefox Marketplace News, other ideas?

Thanks, Scott. Someone from our team should also give it a read, at least until it establishes its own voice and gets going. We may also be able to help with the writing, but we should discuss that with John Slater as well.

I like "notes." Could you give me a little more info about who will be reading this? Will there be an opt-in when a user creates a Marketplace account? I'm trying to think about how this audience might be different from the Firefox & You audience. That may help with the name.

As a reference- App store has "App store Spotlight" (see screen)

As far as users, this list is comprised of Marketplace users that visited MP and were prompted with a opt-in dropdown during their 3rd visit to MP, we only have 3400 names right now but are looking to grow that list.
Firefox & You list is more generic, Since until now we didn't have a dedicated newsletter, MP subscribers received a version of Firefox & You that had an additional module with suggested apps.

As far as process, we talked this with Jess and thought it would be good if you (Matej)/ someone from your team reads the content and provide input, at least for the first few runs, to make sure we are consistent with voice and messages but as Scott pointed we'll be responsible for content and production.

As far as template- I'll create a new bug, the idea though is to re-use the Firefox & You template with slight modifications (headers, more apps in grid)

Hey team, I apologize for the delay. Here's how the Marketplace newsletter plays with Firefox & You:

Currently, when you sign up for the Marketplace News in the Marketplace (Bug 874932), you are sent a special Firefox & You branded welcome template with Marketplace content in the body of the email. Example attached in this bug.

You have 1 subscription flag set to Y which is for the Marketplace newsletter.

Since we did not have the human power to set up a separate "Marketplace" only newsletter at time of launch, these Marketplace subscribers were sent the monthly Firefox & You newsletter with OS + Apps content as part of the larger Firefox & You list. (This is why they get a Marketplace welcome with the Firefox & You branding.) 

However, we set the subscription flags up so that in the future if/when we have content and human power to make this a separate newsletter, we can.

That time is now for EN & ES. \o/

ES is by far our largest segment of Marketplace newsletter subscribers.

All the other Marketplace locales will continue to get Firefox & You until the Marketplace team is able to scale for these other newsletter locales.

We're working together to find ways to make this signup form more prominent in the Marketplace and really start building this email communication - so getting the power behind a branded Markeplace email program is awesome.

Once we have the new branding (title & template), the Marketplace team (Scott, Niran and Amy), with my help and Matej's copy review, will:

1) Create new welcome emails for EN & ES (the other locales will continue to receive the current Firefox & You branding with Marketplace info). 

2) Create a special welcome/first-time email to our EN & ES subscribers telling them about the newsletter relaunch/redesign in very user-friendly terms so that they understand why they're receiving this new-looking & new-feeling newsletter, and what they can expect to get each month.

3) Work closely together on the first several monthly newsletters to make sure everything is good for our users (tone, content, newsletter layout & flow, etc.)


One potential flag to keep in our minds: 

If someone is subscribed to both Firefox & You and Marketplace (they have both subscription flags checked because they signed up for each individually), they will get both newsletters. The Marketplace and Firefox & You teams may need to sync up content to ensure that anyone getting both newsletters will not get bored or inundated with content they've already seen before. Right now that pool of subscribers is small, but if we all do our jobs right, it will get bigger and bigger :)
