I have a MacBook Air running Ubuntu 13.10. When I plug my ZTE FirefoxOS phone into the machine it crashes hard with a kernel panic. I will attach a picture.
Not sure if this is actually a bug in FxOS or my machine:)

I would guess that's a bug with either your host OS or the guest OS (i.e. linux running on the virtual machine), Or maybe you're not using a VM, in which case I would say its a bug in linux on your Air.
In theory, no matter what the phone does, it shouldn't be able to crash the host.
