In some cases, we would like to send marionette js profile builders special configuration at runtime. For instance, I would like to send the gaia-profile-builder (https://github.com/mozilla-b2g/gaia/blob/master/shared/test/integration/profile_builder.js) a custom path for a profile directory to use. This will allow us to run simultaneous marionette-js-runners in gaia using different profiles.
I think profile overrides may be more appropriate for tests to send to the runner.
