We want to ship Firefox with a good list of search engines for Upper Sorbian.

We'll do this in three phases: First, the localization team and flod (Francesco Lodolo) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Michael, we'll need your input on this. The guidelines for making recommendations are found on <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Firefox/Productization>.

We currently use this set for en-US, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives:
Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Amazon, eBay, Twitter, Wikipedia

After we decided on a particular search engine, flod will contact the owner and ask for permission and for specifics, like proper search flags. Michael, we'll likely need your help to at least get the owner's contact information.

Once we have a specification on what the search engines for Upper Sorbian should look like, flod and the localization team will work on an implementation on that. flod will create and attach patches for the desired changes and get them reviewed. After a successful review, flod will land them. Michael, if you're interested, you could create the patches, too. You'd ask flod for review on those before landing.

Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by flod, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by flod. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus requiring extra care here.

The Upper Sorbian team and flod will be driving this bug to completion.
How exactly could I contribute?

Hey Michael, this guide should help answer your question. Essentially, you should select the search providers, content handlers, and RSS readers that are most relevant to your l10n of Firefox. The guide walks you through what to consider when selecting your list of each. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Mainly by telling Jeff and Axel what (if any) of those are available in Sorbian. I'm guessing it will be much like Gaelic - nothing much is available of those tools in Sorbian except for Wikipedia (I'm certain neither Yahoo!, Bing, Amazon, eBay nor Twitter have anything for Sorbian). There may be vestiges of Sorbian on Google if someone worked on Google in Your Language when it was still going but I doubt it. So I think for all these, the best thing to do is to mirror whatever the German Firefox has as that's the primary fallback language for Sorbian. Leaving only Wikipedia.
I fear there are none of them available in Sorbian - escept Wikipedia, but only unofficially. To my unofficial builds I added a modified wikipedia.xml changing short name, description and the necessary urls.

Some years ago I asked for the translation permission for the Google search engine in a time when Google still offered the search engine only. But Google never answered.
It will become 'official' with the release :)

This is the hsb wikipedia but maybe we can re-use MW's xml dunno what's easier for Jeff/Axel:

Component: Other → hsb / Upper Sorbian
You can see a list of productization settings (including searchplugins) for German in this page
http://transvision.mozfr.org/productization/?locale=de&product=browser

Creating a localized version of Wikipedia won't be a problem.

Michael, I think we're only need you to approve including the list of searchplugins flod mentioned there, swapping the German wikipedia with Sorbian wikipedia.
Assignee: nobody → francesco.lodolo
@Jeff: Yes, I agree. Please do it. Thanks.
Michael, can you give me the translation of "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"?
Hi Francesco, that's: "Wikipedija, swobodna encyklopedija".
Attached patch bug985446.patchSplinter Review
This patch covers also bug 985447 and bug 985448, since they're all working on the same file (region.properties).

Productization is basically identical to German, with some small differences:
* As in English, I added Bing as 3rd in search order.
* Added NetVibes as additional feed handler.
* wikipedia-hsb instead of wikipedia-de
* yahoo-de is using the new format (SSL, suggestions, resultdomain)
* I'm still doing the Metro setup to avoid strange behaviors, waiting for en-US to get rid of the entire thing before touching anything in l10n repos.
