Details
If I download files and choose to tell Mozilla which directory to save the file
in, it will put it on the Desktop anyway (ignoring my request).
If it matters in this case, the protocol was FTP, the file was of type
application/macbinary (I think, .bin for sure) and I chose to save the file on a
non-startup disk. I had write permission on the destination directory, the
files I tried were about 200 and 400MB in size.
There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the transfer, just the
destination - so I'm guessing on component.

Create a new profile that should fix the problem.
Bill, what were the steps you went through to request Mozilla save this file in
a particular location? Please be specific. Also, provide the URL you were trying
to download

IIRC, the files were MPEG video, though I don't recall the URL. I would click
on the video, change the dialog from "open with..." to "save to disk" and then
get an OSX filesystem navigation dialog. I selected the folder on my disk with
lots of space, clicked the OK button, and the video saved to my desktop (on my
full disk...).

But it worked today... I can't discount OSX having flaked out before reporting.
Bill, perhaps it would be best to mark this bug WFM for now until some evidence can be
gathered.

Keyser, do you know how to reproduce it? Sound like you've seen it once or
twice. Do you have a copy of a corrupt profile that will cause the problem?
I'm not reproducing it, though I've upgraded OSX versions since I reported it,
which may contribute (or not...). Otherwise, WFM.

mass verification of WorksForMe bugs: to find all bugspam pertaining to this,
set your search string to "IfItWorksForSlappyTheSquirrelThenItWFM".
if you think this particular bug is *still* an open issue, please make sure of
the following before reopening:
a. that it's still a problem with ***recent trunk builds*** on the all
appropriate platform[s]
b. provide clear steps to reproduce (unless a good test case is already in the
bug report), making sure it pertains to the original problem (avoid morphing as
much as possible :)
