Maybe the add-on should be updated for Firefox to recognize the incompatibility.

The addon was updated to note the incompatibility a couple months ago. If you install the addon, you should still be able to open its Dashboard via Developer Tools > Firefox OS Simulator; and when you do, the Dashboard should display a notice about the incompatibility.

I meant so it is not installed at all, because that takes time, as it is 51 MB, which is big for a Firefox extension, and the size is not shown near the download button at AMO.

I understand and agree that it would be preferable!
There might be a way to respin the builds to mark the extension as incompatible with newer versions of Firefox, but it isn't obvious how to do this from the Add-on SDK's command-line interface, and I'm loathe to respin the builds, as they're difficult to submit to AMO (they require manual intervention because of their size).
I also tried marking the extension's compatibility in AMO's interface, but AMO still makes the addon available to users with newer versions of Firefox.
So I think the best solution for now is to continue to tell people wherever possible that they should use newer versions of the Simulator on newer versions of Firefox, then remove this extension from AMO once Firefox 31 replaces Firefox 24 LTS (which is a release version of Firefox for which the extension is still useful).

We can add compatibility overrides on AMO so the add-on shows up as incompatible in certain versions of Firefox. I just need the Firefox version range (29.0a1 and above?) and the extension version range (0 - ?).

Thanks, Jorge, that would be great! The addon is compatible with Firefox versions 19 - 25. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the "extension version range", but if you mean the range of versions of the addon for which to add the override, then I think it's sufficient to add it for just the most recent version, 4.0.1, as that's the only one people are likely to try to download, and AMO already warns people against using older versions of addons.

Okay, I just added the override. It should start to apply very soon.

The override was reverted per bug 1001590.
