Landed https://hg.mozilla.org/build/mozharness/rev/2167f10c5b0b to make sure we're using the right version # in the update queries.
I've updated update.boot2gecko.org as well. Should get updates after tonight's nightlies.

Your build should be on the "nightly" channel, not "default".
I bet that's either using an eng build instead of a nightly, or due to bug 994985.

I thought I do want the eng builds, otherwise cannot get root on device, right?
Eng is for automation.  Non-eng is for humans aiui.  Anyway, I think this is a non-bug other than maybe turning off eng nightlies.

I flashed the proper build, changed channel to nightly, and get an error still: https://pastebin.mozilla.org/4894091
nightly is the wrong channel/ ; it should be 'tarako/1.3.0t/nightly'.  Was that not set already?
http://update.boot2gecko.org/tarako/1.3.0t/nightly/update.xml is a valid channel.
I didn't check, just listened to that crazy guy in comment #5 and changed it to "nightly". I changed to the value you suggested and it works now! Yay, thanks everyone, sorry for the noise.
Yesterday I got as far as successfully having Settings say that I was on the latest build, instead of erroring out.

Today was the first time I had an update. Filed bug 999696 for what happened next, instead of continuing to spam this bug.

Apparently not set to that be default! Filed bug 1001068 for update checks erroring out of the box with these builds.
Per nhirata in bug 989128, we may be moving to sdcard-only updates for Tarako.
