Kerala should be removed from the Asia & the South Pacific page as it is a region of a country, not a country itself.
Please be sure to check to make sure that only countries are added to this page.

Hi Gen-
I'd to talk with you a little more about this.
On the Europe page, we do list language communities such as Basque and Catalan.
Maybe the answer is that we need better visual differentiation between non-country communities and "geo political state" communities?
We do also list Arabic, Francophone, and Hispano non-country communities.
The purpose of listing separate communities within a country is to help potential community members link up with a local Mozilla community.
Thx,
Jen

Happy to chat whenever.

Good point.

Agreed. However it is weird for one regional community to be there when there are dozens of others in that same country who would love to have that same exposure if it was offered to them. If we added in every regional community of every Mozilla community to that page, I'm not sure it would be an effective interface?

Hi Gen-
If it helps more folks get involved with Mozilla, we are happy to tweak the interface to work for as many communities as want to be listed.
David Boswell made the original call for communities to participate via the reps Google group
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.reps.general/nwjfdpJovyU
And communities entered their info in this etherpad: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/moz-spaces-communityInformation
Any additional communities are welcome to file a bug to be added.
I'd prefer not to remove Kerala without asking you to speak with the people who filed the bug to add Kerala (see the link in comment 1 above).
Thx,
Jen

I'd love to see us evolve the current interface to match the reality of how communities are organized instead of narrowing the communities we highlight to just those that fit the current interface.
I think there are a lot of opportunities here for participation. We could have a call for designers to help us imagine what it would look like to include more types of communities. We could also have coders helps us add new communities to the page as well as feature content from each of those communities.

I thought the Kerala community was added to the India page. I think one page per a region community is "too much" and even reduces discoverability.

Love that idea. I'm happy to close this bug if we start something to change what we have now.
If I told all of the communities I work with that they could be featured on the Asia page, I think most would want exposure. But having a national-level group next to a regional group, next to a university group, etc. is that really effective?

Thanks for pointing this out, Gen. The map is organized (for now) using the 2 ways we knew best to make communities discoverable and by using communities that were already in place. 1) by Continent > Country and 2) Language communities.
If another method is better, please feel free to offer suggestions. I want to be sure that we are considering all communities for whatever system we choose to organize the map by. For instance, we would most likely need to keep the language communities, because many have their own dedicated websites and following created by the communities themselves (http://www.mozilla-hispano.org/).
I'm sure we will have some anomalies like Kerala that aren't a language or a country, but are a region. Before altering our map or deciding on a new way to organize the communities, can we identify any similar issues? Have we heard from any other communities that feel like they are misrepresented in the map?

Here's one suggestion for how to handle this based on how the Mozilla Canada site showcases regional communities in Canada (such as Mozilla Quebec, Mozilla BC and Mozilla Toronto).
http://www.mozillacanada.org/
On the Contact page, the local communities that map to countries each have their own page. For example, the Mozilla Canada page is at:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contact/communities/canada/
Could we add content to that country page that shows the regional communities within that country? That's what the Mozilla Canada site is doing -- you go to the home page and there is a sidebar with links to the regional communities in that country.
That would seem to address the situation in other countries. For example, there is a Mozilla India site as well as local communities for many regions within India (Mozilla Kerala, Mozilla Rajasthan, etc).
So this wouldn't be adding a third way to categorize communities -- we'd just be creating another level underneath country communities.

I'm going to close this bug AND make it a blocker for a new tracking bug where we will collect ideas to improve the Contact Us page.

Thanks for keeping Mozilla Kerala in the communities list. I thought I would clarify a little on this point for when this bug is considered in the future.
> I'm sure we will have some anomalies like Kerala that aren't a language or a country, but are a region.
Actually, Kerala being a region inside India is a little different compared to, say, New York being in the U.S.
Mozilla Kerala represents not only the region Kerala, but also the language Malayalam and the ethnic group Malayali (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayali). The community is named Mozilla "Kerala" because, both the language Malayalam and the ethnicity Malayali are (almost) exclusively associated with Kerala, so it made sense.
