User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140314220517 Steps to reproduce: After the install has been in use for a few months, something seems to corrupt. I open Thunderbird from a pinned link on the toolbar of Windows 7. Reinstalling Thunderbird resolves the issue as does going into Task Manager to manually shut down Thunderbird, and then reopen. Actual results: Then Thunderbird opens, but the green circle appears at the top left corner and won't stop. The e-mail won't download. Expected results: The e-mail should have downloaded.
1. what addons do you have installed? 2. it sounds like you have tbird running for several days - is that correct, and how much memory is thunderbird using?

No addons. The client often runs for days. Currently, 85,492K is the memory that Thunderbird.exe is using.

Does it happen if you start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled? - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

I have reloaded Thunderbird since then. The only bug I have now is that forwarded mail won't save to sent.
