Similar to the revamp of the privacy hub, the legal team would like to revamp the legal notices area (it's currently only one page at: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal.html). This is a long term project that we'd like to implement in maybe late Q2 or Q3, if that's feasible on your end. Kicking it off now so you can evaluate, maybe we can have a call to go over.

Goals: centralize our terms of service for different products in one location; make our DMCA and TM notices more accessible; ensure everything is mobile formatted; improve translation process;

Hi Mika-

I'm attaching a draft wireframe of the new Legal landing page to this bug.

And here's the beginning of a requirements doc:
https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/document/d/1GTmEOv8s4NfOLs_DNk5X01FGr2cr_qjW0u1V9uMhxX8/edit?usp=sharing

I'll put some time on the calendar to review some open questions with you the first week of June.

Cheers,
Jen
Hey Jen,

I used your wireframe and added some more detail to the boxes. Here's a visio pdf (instead of my crappy handwritten version!).

We're still on to talk tomorrow. I think I also owe you the links to the copy or URLs.
Hi Jen,

I updated the google doc with the links and noted a few pages that need to be built. Let's meet again to go over the locations of some of the linked pages.

Also, confirmed - no EULA!
Hello All-

I think we are ready to get started on this bug!

Here is what needs to be done:
1. Build a new page to live at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/ per the wireframe in comment #3 using the style here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/

Yay! One question, for the product terms of service, what will the domain name structure be? For example, I added the github links for Firefox Services and Firefox Marketplace, but that's just to pull the markdown. They will need URLS on www.mozilla.org Would it be something like:

www.mozilla.org/about/legal/terms/firefoxmarketplace

www.mozilla.org/about/legal/terms/firefoxservices

www.mozilla.org/about/legal/terms/firefox/services

Cool, looks great. Do we need the /about/ in the middle? I don't know anything about domain names so sorry for the silly question.

I asked offline if we should be linking to the Firefox Marketplace [1] and Firefox Services [2] off-site (to https://marketplace.firefox.com/terms-of-use for example) or if we should be pulling the contents into new mozilla.org (bedrock) pages.

I was told via email to create new bedrock pages and pull in the content, but I wanted to clarify here and bring in Wil (clouserw) for confirmation.

Wil mentioned on IRC that the current URL is hard-coded into releases on devices in the wild, so that old URL would have to live on (or be redirected) at the very least.

Mika, can you confirm that we should be pulling this content into new pages on bedrock? I can see the desire for a consistent experience across legal pages, but there is also a consistent experience to be had while browsing the Marketplace website, for example.

I've worked through the requirements and I've put the info into a more structured format to make it easier to track new/old URLs and progress.

This spreadsheet has a list of all the pages to add to the new Legal page. We can use this spreadsheet to track page/link titles, pages sections, new/old URLs, etc:

https://docs.google.com/a/silverorange.com/spreadsheets/d/1HAq3CAnvora4HS8rWtzFgw0cjBgHMJpMXfQH3FjRYoE/edit#gid=0

mika & jbertsch: can you two please review the spreadsheet and address the gaps?

A few questions in particular:

1. If we put the "terms" pages under /about/legal/terms/example/, do we have anything at the /about/legal/terms/ level of the URL? It seems like overkill to have a whole other page there, but having that level in the URL also seems to imply that such a page may exist.

2. Sections/groupings on the new legal page are unclear. The two attachments on this bug vary. Please edit the linked spreadsheet to have the appropriate groupings and section titles.

3. Should we be porting pages hosted on other sites (Marketplace, Add-ons, Webmaker, etc.)? There are contradictory suggestions in various places on this. If we are to move pages from other sites, do the owners of those other sites know of this yet? For the Marketplace, for example, the URL is linked to from releases on devices in the wild.

4. What should the URLs be for the following new pages?
a. Firefox Services (https://github.com/mozilla/legal-docs/tree/master/firefox_cloud_services_ToS)
b. Acceptable Use Policy (https://mozilla.app.box.com/s/qtz3jkyzvo23rn6qjqaf)
c. "Report abuse of your Copyrights or Trademarks" (https://mozilla.app.box.com/s/srvzj7mjq541g2gpcojs)

Let me know if I can clarify any of these questions. Thanks.
Another question:

5. I see the Privacy section of mozilla.org lives at the root URL of mozilla.org/privacy. This Legal page lives at /about/legal/ - is that difference intentional? Please confirm that the new Legal page should live at /about/legal/
Flags: needinfo?(jbertsch)

Answering the easy ones first:

1. There won't be a page at /terms, unless in the future we end up with so many products that it makes sense to have it's own landing page with all the links.

5. My thinking is: Privacy sits a level higher up because privacy is so core to Mozilla and Firefox products, whereas the Legal docs can live under /about because they are about our products. I can ask Holly to weigh in if you don't think my logic is solid :)

3. My thought on porting was that we should double publishing in-product pages to web pages to make them accessible to users not currently in-product (like Firefox and
Thunderbird), and linking to add-ons etc.

2. I'll update the spreadsheet in the morning.

4. Let me revisit this one with Mika.

Thx!

There are three other pages living under the mozilla.org/legal URL that haven't been addressed here yet:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/eula/
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/eula/firefox-2/
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/eula/firefox-3/

Should these pages be moved/changed in anyway? Perhaps getting "/about/" in their URLs? (eg. /legal/about/eula/)
Hi Steven-

For these, I put URLs in the spreadsheet:
4. What should the URLs be for the following new pages?
a. Firefox Services (https://github.com/mozilla/legal-docs/tree/master/firefox_cloud_services_ToS)
b. Acceptable Use Policy (https://mozilla.app.box.com/s/qtz3jkyzvo23rn6qjqaf)
c. "Report abuse of your Copyrights or Trademarks" (https://mozilla.app.box.com/s/srvzj7mjq541g2gpcojs)

And I think I updated any outstanding ?s in the spreadsheet too.

For EULA, how about:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/eula/
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/about/eula/archive/firefox-2/
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/eula/archive/firefox-3/

Thx,

Hi Steve and Jen,

On the issue of whether the legal docs should be consistent with the legal template or the product template, my main concern is:
- it should be easy for users to view and understand the legal and privacy notices
- the tools like "learn more" expanders, mobile formatted pages, localization support, etc. should be available for all the legal and privacy notices (currently, the in-product versions don't support all of these functions. For e.g. the marketplace and cloud PN that are hosted in-product).
- it should be easy for the legal team to make updates and have them pushed to production
- legal and privacy notices shouldn't be buried deep in-product but easily accessible from web search or in-product

My preference is that the legal and privacy content be hosted on mozilla.org on the Privacy and Legal Hubs. This means that a user who clicks on the Legal or Privacy notice in-product will be taken to a different web property to read the legal and privacy content. For the reasons mentioned above, I'm okay with this. Also, many other companies do the same for this type of content.

I'm totally open to talking more about this if you think there are good reasons not to use this format. Let's meet if you think we should discuss more.

Question, if all these links are moved to the legal hub, what will happen to existing "Licensing & Trademarks" section on mozilla.org: http://screencast.com/t/Z1ZYu2Im6B

Will the section remain there, but clicking on it will take the user to the same content, but on the legal hub?

If these pages should move to the legal hub, I would setup redirects for any existing external links, and update any internal links on the site, like the ones in your screenshot, to point to the new pages.

Got it, so in that case it is okay to move the content to the legal hub. I just want to ensure that people can still get to the content from the links on the Foundation's website.
The legal hub is almost ready. The current version is now up on a demo server for review:

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/

This spreadsheet shows the status of each page:
https://docs.google.com/a/silverorange.com/spreadsheets/d/1HAq3CAnvora4HS8rWtzFgw0cjBgHMJpMXfQH3FjRYoE/edit#gid=0

The pages that are not ready yet are:
1. Firefox terms (about:rights)
2. Firefox Services terms
3. Thunderbird terms
4. Acceptable Use Policy
5. Report abuse of Mozilla’s marks

These pages all imported into the legal-docs repository, but are waiting on changes to bedrock (Bug 1055048) to be pulled from the legal-docs repo into the website.

In the meantime, the main legal page and other pages can be reviewed.

I do find the division of the "Policies" and "Source code & trademark policies" division and headings to be a bit unclear.

I did take some minor liberties in formatting the page. Most notably, I added logos to the Terms list. Feedback is encouraged. Thanks.

I had to give up this demo server for a bit. In the meantime, here's a screenshot of the current version of the updated legal page.

I'll update when we have the demo server back again.
I now have all of the pages updated/imported in this pull request: https://github.com/mozilla/bedrock/pull/2250

As soon as a demo server is free, I'll get this up to be reviewed by the Legal team.

Rebecca, we need QA on the recent updates to the legal notices pages. Basically need to verify that all the redirects work and that there is no broken links (everything in comment 27).

Mika will make sure the content itself is correct.

Is this something you could review this week?

Steven Garrity can assist and answer questions regarding QA.

Thanks! I reviewed with the legal team and am noting the requested changes here. This comment 29 is on the "Terms" Section.

(1) please create a different section called "Downloadable Software" for the Firefox and Thunderbird links. You can then remove these two products from the terms section and stick them in Downloadable Software. This is based on community feedback.

(2) please remove OpenBadges, Persona, and Firefox Affiliates from the Terms section. They are not core products so it's okay if they are not top level on the legal page. Instead, users can discover the terms directly from the product webpages.

(3) please (i) move "Acceptable Use Policy" from the Policy section into the Terms section and (ii) rename it to "Conditions of Use" in the URL title and also the actual page heading

(4) please add to the Terms section:
- "Mozilla Privacy Policy & Product Notices" w. link to privacy hub

(5) FYI - we have 2 products that will get added to the Terms section in the next month. You can push the legal site to production without these, but I wanted to give you a heads up that it's coming:
- "The Open Standard" (this is for the Voices initiative -- I'll write this legal notice this month. Also, I'm not sure if it's "The Open Standard" or "Open Standard", so please confirm w. that team)
- "Firefox Hello" (I'm not sure if there is an exclamation mark after the Hello - I'll confirm)

To recap from above points 1-5:
(i) the major changes to the Terms section is that it will have the following products:
Mozilla Websites / Firefox Services
Firefox Marketplace / Hello
Webmaker / The Open Standard
Mozilla Privacy Policy & Product Notices
Conditions of Use

(ii) Firefox and Thunderbird will be removed and added to a new "Downloadable Software" section.

Hi - please ignore my comment 30. I had some further feedback from the team and added everything to this doc, which is hopefully easier to understand: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rWTFpsuzIoLGj_FdBoEeIoymVVVbc8-BsnAzPYJrHMs/edit?usp=sharing

Happy to meet with you to discuss in case the document is confusing.

Thanks!
Mika
Hi Steven-

Could we also please change the title of the page from "Legal Notices" to "Legal."

Thx,
Jen
I've verified everything in Comment 27 on a variety of browsers/OS combos- no page, link or redirect bugs were found.
During testing I found a number of minor issues which were not related to redirect, and which also exist on prod:

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/trademarks/list/
- Firefox trademark is below-center

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/terms/mozilla/
- copyright agent address incorrect

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/terms/services/
- old Evelyn address listed for contact

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/trademarks/community-edition-policy/
- unconnected links within the paragraph headers:
What Do I Do If I Want to Create a Modified Build?
What Happens to Builds Made Before the Policy Change?

https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/eula/
https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/eula/firefox-2/
https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/eula/firefox-3/
- missing style sheet

I'll be happy to file them as one or multiple bugs if need be.

Thanks, Rebecca. What do you mean by the address is incorrect and old evelyn ave address? I thought our address is:

Mozilla Corporation
331 E. Evelyn Avenue
Mountain View, CA 94041
USA
Email: dmcanotice at mozilla dot com
Phone Number: 650-903-0800
Fax: 650-903-0875

Once we move to production, I'll replace the entire DMCA section in this page with a link to the new Report Abuse of your copyrights and trademarks page. So it will be a more consistent experience.
Ugh- I saw Evelyn and read it as Castro - my bad. There is no problem with teh address.

Phew, thanks!
I think I have addressed all of the issues from Comment #32. Please review on the demo server: https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/

I took the liberty of moving the "Report abuse" section into the sidebar. I think the page is a bit more balanced this way, and it is a different type of content than the rest of the main column. Feedback is welcome.

I have a few questions:

1. Do I have the links/text right in the "Report abuse" section? I wasn't entirely clear from the Google Doc.

2. If I do have the "Report abuse" links right, is it correct that we no longer have a link from the Legal page directly to the fraud-report page? (https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/fraud-report/)

3. For the pages that were linked from the Legal page, but have since been removed, should they still be moved into the /about/legal/ URL structure? This spreadsheet shows a list: https://docs.google.com/a/silverorange.com/spreadsheets/d/1HAq3CAnvora4HS8rWtzFgw0cjBgHMJpMXfQH3FjRYoE/edit#gid=0 or see the list in Comment #27
Flags: needinfo?(udevi)
Now that I see some of the feedback an re-read the Google Doc, I think I may have misinterpreted the instructions.

From what I understand, I should take what I've got on the demo server now (https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/) and do the following:

1. Remove the entire white boxes labelled "Privacy notices and policy" and "Trademark policy"

2. Add two links in the bottom of the "Terms, privacy and trademarks" box, with the following titles/URLs:
   a. Privacy Notices and Policy (https://www.mozilla.org/privacy/)
   b. Trademark Policy (https://www.mozilla.org/about/legal/trademarks/)

Also, can you confirm which of the following URLs (if any) should be moved to the /about/legal/ URL structure? I'm assuming, at least, that anything currently under /legal/ should be moved to /about/legal/

Also, a few other things on the page on demo2 that I noticed are below. Email me if you want to talk through this - maybe the google doc wasn't the best way to explain everything. Just let me know what's best.

(1) the link is wrong here: http://screencast.com/t/vxcXdmjGDBRY
The correct link should go to: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/fraud-report/

(2) The "Report Abuse" area on the right hand side looks very cramped.
Can you instead rename the current Report Abuse heading to "Protect the Fox". Take out the bullets and leave the first sentence so it says "Help us protect our users by reporting abuse of Mozilla Trademarks." As mentioned above, the correct link is: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/legal/fraud-report/

(3) Add another section underneath the "Protect the Fox" and call it "Takedown Requests". The sentence underneath will say "Report abuse of your copyrights and trademarks." The current link is correct - https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/report-abuse/

(4) Change the title of this page: https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/report-abuse/ to say "Report Copyright & Trademark Abuse"
Mika,
These most recent changes have been made and can be reviewed here: https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/about/legal/

The title of the /about/legal/report-abuse/ page comes from the document in the mozilla/legal-docs repo (https://github.com/mozilla/legal-docs/blob/master/report_abuse/en-US.md). Should I file a pull request to have the heading changed there?

The other outstanding question is about pages that were part of this bug, but have since been dropped from the bug. The list of links in Comment #40 were moved so their URLs now start with /about/legal/. However, now that they are no longer to be linked to from the /about/legal/ page, I need to know if they should stay in their original locations, or continue to move to the /about/legal/* URLs, as they are on demo2 now.

Ping me on IRC (sgarrity) if you'd like to discuss further.

I updated the github repo with the title change. The sections you created on the right hand side, and their links, are now correct.

For the list of links, you can keep them in their original locations. Thank you.

I didn't see the above changes on demo2. Let me know when they're done. Thanks!
I missed the trademark/privacy links - my mistake. demo2 has been updated.

I removed the icons from that first "Terms, privacy and trademarks" section, because we only have distinct icons for Webmaker and the Marketplace.

I haven't changed the capitalization of the headings yet - I wanted to confirm first. Most headings use "Sentence case". Please confirm.
mika, and should any of the trademark pages be moved under the /about/legal/ structure?

I have the following pages moved from:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/trademarks/list/

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/legal/trademarks/poweredby/faq/

(replacing /foundation/ with /about/legal/)

Should these changes remain, or should I undo those moves for the trademark pages?
Flags: needinfo?(udevi)
I verified the link/wording changes, except the updated title on /report-abuse has not been updated [although I can see the commit on the repo].
Hi Steve - I didn't see you on IRC (my username is "Mika"). Are you free for a call today at 5pm PST? I don't know where you're located, but I an do early tomorrow morning if that is more convenient. I'm in an all day training today.

- These two sections should be deleted: http://screencast.com/t/00qDhPtys1OK
- Not sure why you deleted the logos in the "Terms, privacy & trademarks" section, since they were fine. Can you add back? It adds some color to the page.
- Okay, it's fine to go with the lower case words so that it says "Terms, privacy & trademarks". I wasn't aware of the style preference, but that is a legit reason to not capitalize.
- On the same topic, please replace "Takedown Requests" with "Takedown requests" so that it follows the capitalization styling.

I removed the logos because we only had logos for Webmaker and Marketplace, though I've added the Firefox logo for the "Firefox Services". We're just falling back on the "m" logo for "Our Websites", "Privacy Notes & Policy", and "Trademark Policy". Are there other images we could use for those?.

Updated.

Now that I've removed those extraneous sections, my earlier suggestion of moving fraud-report and report-abuse sections to the sidebar doesn't really make sense anymore. Now the sidebar is longer than the main left column. If we move those two sections back into the main column, would you like use different wording/headings? Thanks.

Even though the sidebar is longer it seems okay to me. Let's leave it this way for now. If we have more products in the future, the terms section will be larger.

For the logos in the terms section, can you put "Privacy Notices and Policy" in the bottom left hand corner and Webmaker in the middle right where Privacy currently is? That might balance out the logos if the two M logos are both on the bottom.

This looks great, thanks for all of your work. I'll share with Denelle tomorrow and let you know when she green lights it for production.

I'm still working on reverting the URL redirects/page-moves for the various other pages no longer included.
Ok, the other URLs that were changed have been reverted. What is on demo2 now should be stable and ready for careful review.
Verified on demo2: capitalization/text changes, sections removed, pages reverted to /foundation links, logo icons returned.

I received one last UX request before production. Otherwise, the copy and UX is approved. Yay!

In this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/szdHzCaT can you do something visual to set row 3 apart from the rows above it? For example:
- maybe more space between row 2 and row 3,
- or maybe a line (http://screencast.com/t/OMmVMb90) like the line that is used to set apart the subsections here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox/

If it's helpful, the reason to set row 3 apart is that it addresses the "privacy and trademark" aspects of this section. The 4 links above in row 1 and row 2 are all Terms.

Since we have horizontal lines as part of the list styles already, adding that divider gets a bit visually complicated.

I've attached three variations here for your consideration:

a. Add a simple horizontal divider as requested

b. Use a simpler list style to differentiate the Privacy/Trademark list

c. Use separate titles/boxes for the "Terms" and the "Privacy & trademark" lists

I prefer option 'c'.

Agreed, option 'c' is best. Thanks!

Thank you Steve and Rebecca!
One thing, I think Jen mentioned this in a comment earlier. Can you please change the footer of the mozilla.org pages [1] so that:
- "Legal Notices" becomes "Legal"
- "Privacy Policy" becomes "Privacy"

This would also change the references on other pages in the top left under Mozilla and on the top right in the sidebar [2] so that it says "Legal" and not "Legal Notices"

[1] http://screencast.com/t/j7dTcMMi
[2] http://screencast.com/t/cO9WyO9mz
Those "Legal Notices" and "Privacy Policies" changes must have gotten lost somewhere along the way. Here's another pull request with those changes.
Since the "Legal Notices" string changes touch most pages through footer, it will take a few days for localization to catchup before we merge these changes in.
Okay, thank you
I see the updated Legal page title, I don't [yet] see the updated footer on allizom.org.
