We have way too many ways of talking about what sort of build we are building; --enable-release just adds to the confusion. (I saw it today and incorrectly assumed that that meant we were doing a "release" build...and I should probably know better.) A more verbose option would be better. I hereby issue a call for all expert bikeshed painters to emerge and share their strong opinions on the color of this bikeshed.
Redistributors are using that option. Renaming it is not really helpful to them. That said, what did you expect from --enable-release?
