Hi my name is Jessica Osorio, from the weekly FirefoxOS call :)
I'm Chelsea's backfill and I'll be managing Affiliates moving forward.

Apologies for this last-minute request but Australis messaging was changed recently and we need to get the banners' new copy localized.

Is it possible to localize the new banners by April 25, 2014?

> Is it possible to localize the new banners by April 25, 2014?

Hi Jessica, first of all welcome to Mozilla ;-)

And now, to the sad part: unfortunately that's not possible. We usually require at least 2 weeks[1] for this kind of projects, and that would make sense without over 300 strings to translate for Australis launch + QA doing tests on Firefox OS 1.4 in these days.

April 25 is in 4 days, and I don't want to create extra noise, since we're already pushing people over the edge with material to translate.

Banners will also require a final review from localizers, since just localizing the text is not enough, you need to approve the final graphic result.

As Jean can confirm, we're still waiting for snippets translation in this cycle, and we started the process 3 weeks ago.

If this is something we want on the long run, we can set up the process after April 29.

Hi Jessica, as flod said, this is terrible timing, everybody is swamped with work, the release is in 7 days.

I'd like to understand better your request so as to see if we can do something about it, could you answer to these questions please?

- How was this list of locales chosen? Some of these locales have almost no user-base and not much potential for growth, is that the list of locales currently supported on the affiliates website? Can we have other locales?
- Will these banners be supported on the long term or will they just be used for the Australis launch?
- Are these banners replacing existing banners? If so, does it mean that people currently using a set of banners on their sites from affiliate will have their banner replaced by those during the launch? If it is the case, how long will they be online?
- Can we have access to the source files for the buttons in case we have volunteer designers willing to help with the generation of buttons?
- All departments should work with the community (with a community steward per department), are there volunteer designers that can help us scale the creation of these buttons?
- Do you have graphic design ressources available for this project?

I am thinking that we could work on getting these buttons localized with the locales that are already ready for the release but not distract those still working on shipping. Of course, the life span of these buttons is an important factor.

I am removing flod as the assignee until we know more about this project and can better assess its feasability.

Thanks

Hi Pascal!

It's very nice to meet you!

I'm going to try to answer your questions as best I can right now, below.
Please note, I'm in the process on on-boarding to everything that Chelsea would manage so I may not have all the answers at first.

Thank you for your patience :)

** We totally understand it's really tight timing. If they cannot be done, we are considering to reach out to an agency.

> - How was this list of locales chosen? Some of these locales have almost no

> currently supported on the affiliates website? Can we have other locales?

** Most of these are supported on the site. I talked to some team members that we can have banners for locales that don't have full site translations. We are totally open to other locales and to any recommendations or suggestions you many have.

> - Will these banners be supported on the long term or will they just be used
> for the Australis launch?

** These banners will be supported for the long term because we're only using the term "Firefox" not any specifics on the version. I added a link to the current graphics in the first post but I'm adding again here for easy reference: https://bug984171.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=8408710
The messaging was created with the purpose of these banners being evergreen.
Note, it's one banner in different sizes

** I'm not sure if they will will replace existing banners (let me search for that answer and get back to you). However, as far as those who already have existing banners, we are planning on targeting them with and email to invite them to update with the new banners.

** The creation is not the issues, the designs are almost complete, we just need to localized copy in order to get them all good to go.

** Shared above :)

Also, I spoke to Winston about this earlier today, who is currently my boss during all the transitions with Mary and Chelsea and mat-leave and he suggested that I reach out to Jess Davis who has a team of localizers who may be of great help here too!

Jess, please let us know from the locales listed in my initial post, which ones your localizers could help us with.

Thanks team! Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'd be happy to jump on a call too, if that will help make this easier.

Ideally, we'd know by EOD tomorrow, what locales can be done by the resources we have an which cannot so that we can proceed to contact an agency, if needed.

Thanks again!

Since they're needed for a long time after launch, I'd very much prefer to let our localizers work on them, even if it happens after April 29.

Experience with external agencies has always been far from optimal, and I don't like the idea of banners, unreviewed by our community, floating around. The message in this banner is used across the entire Australis mozilla.org experience (e.g. https://www-demo4.allizom.org/en-US/firefox/desktop/), so it's fundamental to be consistent with existing translations.

Without the localized strings, you don't know how "final" the design is (talking from experience).

I might be wrong but I think there's a lot of overlap between Jess' resources and our l10n teams.

Just a note, replacing/deleting banners on Affiliates is not _really_ supported right now. There's all sorts of issues with removing banners after users have created links with them, so for now, assume you can only add banners and never remove them.

Flod is correct. There is overlap and the newsletter teams are also maxed out at the moment with getting last minute emails & snippet copy ready. I can always ask, as they are all super excited about the Australis launch, but I need a place to point them to how to localize (or I need the strings to put in a gdoc) and the ideal timeline. (Our teams use gdocs instead of the cool tools Flod has, but maybe if I send them links and instructions they may be able to jump in.)

Hi Jess:

I just opened this doc:

Let me know if you need any more details.

Thank you!
FYI, we are getting ready for the launch now and some locales have finished all the launch work. I am currently in the Paris office with 15 French localizers for a translation sprint for the launch and we are going to put this banner in this afternoon TODO list. So you may have it at least for French before the release if you want to create buttons for it on Monday.

Hello,

we have created banners in French based on the PSDs provided in the bug during our localization sprint in Paris. This is a ZIP and the images are in PNG format. We had to change some font sizes to make our strings fit in.

I hope this can help.
Note that the word 'privacy' is not going to fit for a lot of locales as it is usually much longer when translated and can sometimes be several words:

You have a stray "Download Firefox" in FFx-Australis_banner_300x216.png ;-)
Indeed. This is the new version with the full French translation :-)
