Dev Derby is currently a part of MDN, but is in process of being migrated to community ownership/stewardship. As part of this process, the community team is looking to make significant changes to how the contests are organized and how the demos are hosted. The idea (which as been discussed with Brett, Bobby & Laura) is to make the submitted demos available in Thimble for remixing. The idea is to have the demos submitted through the Make API and be hosted in a Dev Derby Gallery or channel. Opening a bug to start a discussion on how we could make this happen!
Thanks Ali. Just want to clarify a few things before we get started. - Thimble can create/edit/publish HTML pages and host them on makes.org. - When a user publishes a Thimble make, it's hosted on makes.org with their username as a subdomain. e.g.: https://secretrobotron.makes.org/thimble/MjMwNzUyMjU2/fun - Dev Derby demos can be submitted through Thimble, and can be identified by a tag (attached when publishing), maybe #devderby2014 - There is a MakeAPI gallery that can be used to show lists of makes from the MakeAPI: https://github.com/mozilla/MakeAPI-Gallery (might need some patching, since it's a couple months old now) The easiest path forward is likely to have a MakeAPI gallery on the Dev Derby site, with some instructions on how to submit makes through Thimble. How does that sound?
The issue we had with Thimble is hosting assets, eg images that are part of the submission.

unfortunately Thimble does not do any asset storage of any sort, so some online hosting for assets would still be necessary.
If it's something like images, imgur would make a good image host.
I will be invalidating this ticket, as the actions required mostly involve placing the necessary media "somewhere on the web", for which there are quite a few options. If the idea is to turn webmaker, or thimble, into a CDN then a new issue should be filed.

Mike - The idea was that if we do use Make API then we'd want a gallery that displays Dev Derby content exclusively, rather than having to pick it out from a more general webmaker gallery.
Hey Kensie We've built a new tool - The Gallery Maker - which might be exactly what you need. Basically, it lets you log into a webmaker account, and build sorted lists of makes which can be retrieved later for various purposes, including custom galleries. It's a bit rough around the edges, but it'd be great if you could become one of the first users of it! It's currently at https://gallery.webmaker.org I'd be happy to address any questions/issues with the tool here, in IRC or by email should the need arise

Chris, Yes, this is what was meant by this bug, and it's great to see it's ready!

Blargh, submitted too early. Kensise: I'm not sure who is creating the dev derby galleries, but if the Gallery Maker is enough to get started with, feel free to close this bug.
note: the gallery maker app is now located at gallery.webmakerprototypes.org
