Details

Found in

  • Beta 124.0b3

Affected versions

  • Beta 124.0b3

Tested platforms

  • Affected platforms: Windows 11, macOS 13, Ubuntu 22.04

Preconditions

  • Ensure that strict settings is enabled in "about:preferences#privacy".

Steps to reproduce

  1. Navigate to Yahoo email.
  2. Log in with the specific credentials that I can provide privately (please contact me via Slack for these).
  3. Open the network monitor web console and inspect the "https://ad.doubleclick.net" tracker.

Expected result

  • The "https://ad.doubleclick.net" tracker is correctly blocked in the web console, displaying:
The resource at "https://ad.doubleclick.net/ddm/trackimp/N1106503.5226456PUBLICAIROMANIAS/B31585709.390550085;dc_trk_aid=582069843;dc_trk_cid=211625390;ord=1710422774;dc_lat=;dc_rdid=;tag_for_child_directed_treatment=;tfua=;gdpr=1;gdpr_consent=CP6sKsAP6sKsAAOACBROArEoAP_gAEPgACi..." was blocked because content blocking is enabled.

Actual result

  • The following message appears in the web console : "Referrer Policy: Ignoring the less restricted referrer policy “no-referrer-when-downgrade” for the cross-site request: https://securepubads.g.doubleclick.net/tag/js/gpt.js"

Regression range

  • Not a regression.

Additional notes

  • This issue seems to reproduce only on early Betas. It does not occur in later Beta versions like 124.0b6, as those builds utilize different strict lists to block trackers, thus nothing is blocked in ETP panel, "Tracking Content" section.
  • As per discussions with engineering, the blocking behavior in early Betas should mirror the one from Nightly builds. Although the "https://ad.doubleclick.net" tracker is displayed as blocked in the ETP panel, this is not reflected in the web console.
Has STR: --- → yes

Desktop QA has been highlighting this defect as a known issue for a few release cycles now, following regression testing. Tim, it would really help us if you set a priority on this bug — it will give us clarity on whether this issue is still worth mentioning in future test reports.

Flags: needinfo?(tihuang)

Mark this bug as P3 because this only affects ETP strict mode on Nightly and early Beta, and doesn't have any web breakage.
