Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.4) Gecko/20010913
BuildID:    2001091311

I'm running a Debian/Progeny-1.0-Box 2.2.19 and the recent official Mozilla 0.9.4.

Usually, the sound-device XMMS uses is /dev/dsp. This causes a problem on my
system. Mozilla does not start when playing sounds on /dev/dsp. Im using XMMS as
test-application, because you can define the sound-device that should be used in
the XMMS preferences. The bug is reproducable with other applications like
Freeamp, too.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. start XMMS with /dev/dsp as the configured sound-device
2. do play some sounds
3. try to start mozilla

Actual Results: The Mozilla-processes are being loaded, but the browser-window
does not appear.

Expected Results: Well, I expect the Mozilla-browser-window to pop up. :)

After doing some experiments, I discovered the following:

1st testcase:

-> start XMMS with /dev/dsp as the configured sound-device, do play sounds
-> then try to start Mozilla
-> the Mozilla-processes are being loaded, but the browser-window does not appear
-> stop playing sounds
-> the browser-window pops up correctly, no further errors
-> start playing sounds again
-> Mozilla is not influenced

2nd testcase:

-> start XMMS with /dev/dsp1 as the configured sound device (in XMMS
preferences) and play some sounds
-> try to start Mozilla
-> everything works fine

As I have mentinoned, it's the same thing with Freeamp. I don't have the
possibility to check this bug on other Linux-Boxes right now. Does Mozilla try
to deal with /dev/dsp at startup ? There are no error-messages on the console,
though. This is a minor bug, but I can't imagine the easy workaround right now. ;)

By the way, thank you for the excellent bug report, Carlo Moritz Goellner. It
makes it easier for us to determine what is going on. :)

Anyway, the bug that I duped your bug to has more information on this issue.
Thanks for helping test Mozilla! :)
I should note that a patch was checked in last night which should fix this. So
if you could try a recent nightly, and comment on bug 58339, that would be great!
