cannot stop download of unreachable pop server, too many error dialogs

Details
My somewhat flaky DSL server makes it sometimes impossible to reach my POP
account. When this happens, upon clicking on "Get Messages", the throbber is
active. Pressing the stop button and selecting View->Stop does nothing. When
Mozilla decides it has failed to connect, an error dialog immediately pops up,
when it is dismissed, another identical error dialog immediately pops up, and
when that one's dismissed yet another pops up. I am always presented with
exactly three such error dialogs.
Sorry, i forgot to jot down what the error dialog says (probably something like
"cannot connect to POP3 server"), and my POP server is reachable right now, so i
can't check it.
I'm using Linux build 2001-10-03-08, but i've been seeing this for quite a while.

The three error dialogs all say "Failed to connect to the server."

Reporter,
Which pop server are you using? Can you please create a POP3 protocol log and
attach it to the bug. Here are the instructions as to how to obtain a log.

The POP server is pop.ucla.edu. I will try to create a log tonight, but since
the problem is intermittent, i may not be able to reproduce right away.

If you can get the log when you see the problem will be helpful to know what's
happening. So it is probably good to see if you can get to reproduce and also
note the steps here. I was wondering if we could get a test account on this pop
server to see if this problem can be reproducible.

I've used the protocol-log as you described and reproduced the bug twice. On
both occasions, the log has been empty (zero bytes). (Whereas the log is full of
stuff as soon as i successfully connect.) Thus, the problem seems to be that one
cannot preempt an *attempt* to connect to a server. A mail download cannot be
stopped until the connection to the server is actually made.

Sheela, I don't know how a protocol log will help here. Anyway, i will try
to work on this one but it is low priority.

To amend the original description, i don't think that i get all of those error
dialogs anymore, i just can cancel the attempt to connect.
