121778 - transparent gif images get chopped up when redrawn

when .gif images with a reasonable amount of transparency (usually around the
edges) first loads, it looks fine.  Once the image has been scrolled off the
screen, or any image that loaded off screen, when loaded back onto the screen
appears as chopped up components of the original.  Often, the transparent
background is replaced with black splotches and horizontal lines as well.

but probably ignored due to its irrelevancy to that bug.  Note also comments 117

Running 0.9.7 build 2001122106, viewed with ATi RAGE PRO TURBO at 800x600x32 bit.

I've noticed similar problems on http://www.debianplanet.org/ with the main
title graphic and the trash can topic graphic (but oddly, none of the others). 
These two are PNGs and I can't find anything different about them that makes
them exhibit this behavior.

(I've noticed this as early as 20020214XX, but I don't use every nightly)

Strangely enough, I have no problem with the PNGs on debianplanet.  As recently
as 2/18's nightly, though, I'm still having problems with transparent .gif's. 
Another characteristic of my problem is that the non-transparent portion of the
image is shadowed in the transparent portion.  I will try to post an example of
this.  

Could this be a graphics card-specific issue?
