Mar 23 15:20:35 <bc_gnumake> they change the ua string right? Mar 23 15:23:05 <bc_gnumake> if they modify it so it is their own distro then they need to add debian/version to the ua Mar 23 15:23:17 <bc_gnumake> we can evang that Mar 23 15:23:26 * caillon doesn't know. Mar 23 15:23:29 <caillon> their diff is huge Mar 23 15:23:44 * caillon looks Mar 23 15:23:46 <bc_gnumake> then they need to add their vendor/version stuff to the ua Mar 23 15:25:20 <caillon> It doesn't appear they do from the diff Mar 23 15:25:21 <caillon> http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/pool/non-US/main/m/mozilla/mozilla_0.9.9-1.diff.gz Mar 23 15:25:32 <bc_gnumake> dont' have time to look Mar 23 15:25:51 <caillon> I searched for "agent" and only found references to the UA pref, and to Talkback agent Mar 23 15:25:59 <caillon> heh Mar 23 15:26:51 <bc_gnumake> search for /[dD]ebian\// Mar 23 15:27:04 <bc_gnumake> or any occurence of debian Mar 23 15:28:41 <caillon> k Mar 23 15:33:10 <caillon> it doesn't appear so, from the diff, but I'm trying to track down a debian user to confirm Mar 23 15:33:58 <bc_gnumake> and they should maintain their own release notes to show what they changed from the normal mozilla release Mar 23 15:35:46 <bc_gnumake> and they shouldn't even call it mozilla. it should be debzilla or something else ------------------------------- <biesi> caillon: you wanted somebody using mozilla on debian, right? <caillon> biesi: yeah, what is the default UA string you get? <biesi> caillon: according to about: it is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i586; en-US; rv:0.9.9) Gecko/20020320

Why is this a bug in Mozilla? The Debian Bug Tracking System would be more appropriate to report this 'bug', in my opinion.

Bob's first comment is: "they change the ua string right?" Perhaps you could fill us in because it would seem that that kind of question is because some bug shows up in Debian's Mozilla but not in the upstream one. If that is the case that is understandable but the user-agent-policy, http://www.mozilla.org/build/revised-user-agent-strings.html, doesn't specify when a build should be considered a branded. Is that on any change (even those to, say, conform with Linux filesystem standards); the incororation of bug fixes that will be in later versions of Mozilla (eg, the Debian build already has the fix for bug 83804 incorporated); or something else? [[ addedd dbaron for CC in case guidelines come out of this bug so the user-agent policy can be clarified ]] Btw, the Debian mozilla diffs are located at: http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mozilla/ and the latest one 0.9.9-4 incorpates a user-agent change.

This issue was raised with the Debian Mozilla maintainer. He agreed that some of the changes were not specific to porting Mozilla to Debian but instead changed the behavior of Mozilla. It was for that reason we discussed adding Debian to the UA string so that it could be identified. While it is not clear exactly when a vendor should include their information in the UA, changing the support for standards or embedding into a different application such as K-Meleon however should imply that an identification is necessary. We had similar issues (to a greater degree however) when K-Meleon used an identical UA string to Mozilla even though K-Meleon did not support XUL or Sidebar Tags. If the Debian Mozilla UA string has been modified, then this bug can be marked fixed.

Looks like the Debian maintainer has made this change. From the Debian package changelog: mozilla (2:0.9.9-4) unstable; urgency=high * added vendor string "Debian" to user-agent value. This is needed, and important. see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133171 http://www.mozilla.org/build/revised-user-agent-strings.html * debian/update-mozilla-chrome: - fix mv erorr (closes: #139862) * remove embedding-alttext-in-tooltip patch. It is marked as INVALID by bugzilla.mozilla.org. * added fr templates. (closes: #139884) * added more patches - bugzilla83289 closes: #138788 single scanlines sometimes dissappear when scrolling text * README.Debian: fix comment for cvs snapshot package. (closes: #140669) * debian/rules: --enable-xineram (closes: #140620) * debian/mozilla-runner: quote filename for white space. (closes: #140895)
