This is NOT a bug.

Example of shortcuts

CTRL+1 -> First Tab
CTRL+2 -> Second Tab
...

CTRL++ -> Next Tab
CTRL+- -> Previous Tab
there's Strg+PageUp / Strg+PageDown -> WONTFIX
Ctrl+NUMBER is already used to launch individual components
Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- are already used to change size of text

Ctrl+PageUp, Ctrl+PageUp exist for changing tabs.

Resolving WONTFIX, since those shortcuts are already used.

ok, thanks.

I have found this
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/ui/accessibility/mozkeylist.html

Sorry!
sorry, but reopening.

it's not acceptable to switch tabs fast enough using ctrl+pgup / pgdown.

and perhaps ctrl + 1/2/3/4 should be reassigned since I don't personally know
anyone who actually uses those combinations (do you?).

on the other hand. we could assign alt+f1/f2 to switch tabs 1 -> 12. or even
ctrl + f1 / f2 / etc.

using ctrl+pgup / down is OK if you're moving to one tab away.

this needs to considered thoughtfully before being closed or downgraded again.
... keeping in mind the fact that it's intuitive to switch tabs using the ctrl /
alt + 1 / f1 combination.

Summary: SUGGESTION: Keyboard shortcuts for tabs change → keyboard shortcut required for direct tabs change
ctrl + 1/2/3/4 is used for the Mozilla-Components (see in "Window"-Menu)

alt+F* or ctrl+F* is used on many systems (alt+F4= close Window on Win32 and
KDE, alt+F2 = open system menu on KDE......)
humm, good point ;)
.. on using alt / ctrl + f*.

how about alt+1 / 2 ?
.. this won't get in the way of ctrl + 1/2
... marking new.

mIRC uses Alt+1, Alt+2, etc. Some web pages use these as accesskeys, but I
think pages using these accesskeys are uncommon. An example is my start page,

Alias: Ctrl-1
as suggested by dup and comment #6, alt + number is best.

ctrl would be auckward.

as for other applications using alt+number, forget them. those are different
apps altogether. thus the keys would only be used when moz had focus.

infact, even alt + f1, would work.
doesn't x-windows use the alt + ctrl / shift f1 key to switch to the console?

but the function keys are too far away compared with alt. so forget that :)

any update on when this might be fixed?
better yet, anyone wanna write a patch?
alt-n switches deskstations if you use switcher.exe on windows.

this is really wontfix fodder.
what happens if you want to switch to tab 12? or tab 0? or tab 10?
what happens if you can't count tabs? what happens if the tab numbering changes
on you?

What happens if i type <alt>-<numpad-1>? if you expect it to switch tabs you've
sealed this rfe's fate (death) as alt-numbers are used to insert characters
(random site that explains howto:

Ah here we go, interface hall of shame:

will actually read the links i've pasted.

Our User-Centric View
Surprisingly, as part of their modernization of the interface, when IBM
removed the control labels, they also removed essential interface components
such as mnemonic access characters. While RealPhone does provide accelerator
keys for the speed dial numbers, they are based on their numerical position in
the list: to dial the first speed dial number, press ALT+1, for the second,
press ALT+2, for the tenth, ALT+0. Unfortunately, the speed dial numbers do not
have index numbers associated with them, so the user would have to count the
speed dial positions to determine the numerical value to press.

Congratulations, your request has earned a correspondence with a IHoS product.
As such instead of me reassigning this to tabbed browser, I'm reassigning to UID
where it should meet with a timely demise.

Note that using an alias for something where the alias is totally meaningless
and ends up not corresponding with the request is silly. As such, i've returned
your alias to the pool and provided my own which is merely useless.

That Alt+PgUp and Alt+PgDn are somewhat awkward as relative shortcuts is not a
reason to introduce absolute shortcuts. Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2 etc for components
aren't a good precedent because they're a symptom of Mozilla's megalomania
problem. But at least they're visible in the menu, whereas Alt+1, Alt+2 would
not be.

If you want easier relative shortcuts than Alt+PgUp and Alt+PgDn, I suggest
Alt+Up and Alt+Down. They're not taken for anything important at the moment.

losts of good points from timeless, which have a simple answer but would require
quite a bit of coding.
and so, it's probably useless, especially since there aren't many people who use
keyboard shortcuts. :(

> what happens if you want to switch to tab 12? or tab 0? or tab 10?
alt + # would only switch tabs 1 - 9. ctrl + pgup / pgdown can do the rest. Or
even alt + up / down keys as suggested by mpt.

> what happens if you can't count tabs?
hehe, you're funny. :)
I like to think Win XP has a great user interface - pressing the alt key reveals
the keyboard shortcuts. simular thing could be implemented for moz where the
number pops up in place of the tab icon?

> what happens if the tab numbering changes on you?
humm, how so? If you mean, opening a new tab or closing the one in the middle.
then moz would obviously have to re-number tabs.

> What happens if i type <alt>-<numpad-1>?
humm, good point. but pressing more than one number on the numpad would switch
to ascii mode?

I guess it's right to mark it as wontfix, cause i don't want to start a war over
this little thing. And it would probably require many changes to the code which
would possibly present more bugs.

but if we happen to find more dups or supporters of keyboard navigation
(unlikely), then perhaps.

Thanks for your views.

1. keyboard namespace is still large, for example, C-e 1 could be used.
2. you could implement the facility, but not assign any shortcuts with it, let
the user decide what is best for him. If currently Mozilla doesn't allow user to
reassign keys, the best example of doing it that I know of is jEdit
http://www.jedit.org.
