From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020606
BuildID: 2002060613
I am using a mix of default fonts that come with XFree 4.2.0 and high-quality
Windows TTF fonts, seeing as the XFree fonts are far from perfect and very hard
on eyes. Up to version 1.0, all websites I've been to looked consistent, there
was no difference in how the fonts are handled on a per-website basis. However,
with 1.0 this appers to have changed.
Now the majority of the websites is being rendered using this new Anti-Aliasing
(which you can't turn off), while some are not. This creates inconsistency in
the way the websites look. It annoyns me so much, I will probably have to go
back to RC3 until this issue is fixed.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Xfree 4.2.0
2. Install Windows TTF fonts and make XFree see/use them.
3. Install Mozilla 1.0
4. Browse the web and see the websites using AA.
5. Visit the following websites:
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/bugzilla-helper.html
http://slashdot.org/
http://freshports.org/
Actual Results: The websites mentioned should be rendered in the same way as
the rest of the websites.
Expected Results: Some websites appear to be rendered using AA, while some are not.
How do you turn AA off completely ? Personally, I think it looks ugly and I
don't want it. However, I wasn't able to find an option to disable it.

That is the 5th time I rebuild mozilla to try to fix that XFT issue, even
compiling mozi w/out the XFT some pages (eg www.osnews.org) looks really BAD.
probably I'll end up to rebuild and install the rc3 release and I'll keep it for
a while

AA can come from 3 possible sources (that I know of)
1) AA scaled bitmaps - on by default
use this pref to disable:
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/modules/libpref/src/unix/unix.js#244
244 pref("font.scale.aa_bitmap.enable", true);
As far as I know this code has not changed recently.
2) AA TrueType (direct FreeType access) - off by default
see this URL to enable:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fonts/unix/enabling_truetype.html
As far as I know this code has not changed recently.
not available in Redhat RPMs
3) AA TrueType (indirect FreeType access via Xft)
to my knowledge only available on experimental builds.
Ask blizzard for more info on this.

Reporter: Can you reproduce this bug with a recent build of Mozilla (for
example, 1.4 RC1)? If so, then please comment again with details. If not, then
please resolve this bug as WORKSFORME. Thanks.

Since over 1 month no answer from the reporter, so closing bug as worksforme.
If the bug exists in newer builds (1.4 final) then look for a similar bug or
reopen this bug.
