User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826 My search preference is set to 'Google' in the edit->preferences->'Internet search'->'Default Search Engine' tab. When Mozilla is started from the Start menu or taskbar icon in Windows, 'Google' appears in the Search Tab of the Sidebar. However, if Mozilla gets started by clicking on a URL in a text of an email message in Outlook or in a text of a Word Document, etc., the 'Search using' in the Sidebar displays 'Bugzilla@mozilla.org' instead. That behavior is pretty consistent. But what I have also noticed on occasion in these cases is that edit->preferences->'Internet search'->'Default Search Engine' shows Netscape as the default, which I know I have never picked. Any ideas why this is happening? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. set your default search engine preference to Google 2. close all browsers. find an email message that contains a URL and click on the URL 3. this will launch Mozilla (it has to be your default browser in Windows). Actual Results: 1. The Search tab in the Sidebar will display: "using: Bugzilla@mozilla.org" 2. The Internet Search in Preferences will display: "Netscape" as the default engine. Expected Results: Keep "Google" as the default search engine

==> Preferences What do you think of this? I haven't been able to reproduce this. Maybe it's a dupe of something you already have.
Component: Search → Preferences

To be more precise, I can't reproduce this because I don't have Windows XP. Since nobody watching the search components have been able to look into it, I've sent it to the preference component, where - maybe - somebody will find the bug and try to reproduce the behavior.
The identical behavior is also observed with 100% consistency in Win2000. Mozilla version: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826

Confirming, since there's a dupe. Anyone with Windows XP can look into this? (Linux here...)

Coming over from 171653, this bug does seem to be similar. As requested I have tried going to several links from inside Outlook but was unable reproduce the problem. One thing that I noted before is that I have seen this same thing I reported in 171653 in Win2K as well so I do not think that this is only an XP related problem. I bothered me enough to say something. I will continue to try to figure out how to reproduce the problem. Thanks.

So far I have been able to reproduce the revert to default search engine on the first 2 times I launch Mozilla. On a Win2K system I launched Mozilla by clicking a link in MSN Messenger (view new messages) and ended up with Buzilla@Mozilla.org for my search engine (should be Google). I changed in on the search tab and tried again with the same results. Further tries resulted in Google. On an XP system I had a similar experience after starting Mozilla from the quick launch bar (the thing to the right of the Start menu). I will continue to try to find the exact pattern that is needed to reproduce this problem.

It sems to be 50-50 with my browser in XP. I get Google half the time while I get dmoz.org the other half.

Dupe of bug 187293. Duping to that newer bug because it already contains the explanation what happens. See bug 187293 comment #17. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 187293 ***
