Thunderbird (like Firefox, bug 585398) does not honor Windows shortcut or command line options to start up minimized. This would make a nice complement for our new option When Thunderbird is minimized, move it to the tray. In fact, some of the numerous duplicates of bug 208923 have requested this already.

STR1 (see Screenshot 1):

1.) Place a Windows link to thunderbird.exe in any folder (typically the Windows startup folder: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup).
2.) Right-click on the link file > Properties (or Alt+Enter)
3.) Activate Shortcut tab
4.) Choose Run: Minimized, confirm with OK
5.) Double-click or press Enter to open the link

STR2:

1.) Windows-Run: cmd
2.) From command line: start /min thunderbird.exe (or full path to thunderbird.exe)

For comparison, perform STR1 and STR2 with "notepad.exe".

Actual results:

  • Thunderbird does not start minimized for either STR1 or STR2
  • (Beware of artefacts: The program might start minimized if it was already minimized last time when closed before logging off/shutting down)
  • Notepad.exe does start minimized

Expected results:

  • Thunderbird should start minimized according to Windows shortcut or command line options (regardless in which window state it was closed before).
Component: Mail Window Front End → OS Integration

I don't see this. Thunderbird 78.5.0, Windows 10 20H2, Thunderbird starts minimized when pinned to the task bar or from a desktop icon.

(Firefox does not, by the way).

I can reproduce it (78.6.0, Win 10 1909). Could it be that you don't have a master password, and hence don't get that initial dialog window on startup?

That was supposed to be 78.5.0, sorry. I couldn't find a way to edit my previous comment?

No master password. Sorry if I didn't read the whole thread.

No master password. Sorry if I didn't read the whole thread.

I didn't use master password for testing, but it's reliably reproducable for me on Windows [Version 10.0.18363.1198].
If you tell me where to find the 4-char Windows update version string, I can provide that, too.

Pinned might be a fallacy. If you double-click on pinned icon, first click may start up window-size or maximized and second click may minimize.
Did you follow STR from comment 0 exactly?

As a regular BMO user, you cannot. Imo that's a very big shortcoming of BMO.

It works correctly for me both clicking one on a taskbar pinned icon and clicking twice on a desktop icon.

I just tried both (pinned to taskbar and from a shortcut placed on the desktop) and for me, "minimized" is still ignored.

As I think I said earlier, I do use a master password though, and haven't tested without it.

Thunderbird 78.7.1 64-bit
Windows 10 1909 (18363.1316) 64-bit

Thunderbird still refuses to start minimized, which may be related to the initial Primary Password entry dialog (I'm using that feature.)

Thunderbird 91.1.2 64-bit
Windows 10 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1237) 64-bit

I do not use a master password, and still experience this issue.

It's unrelated to the Primary Password dialog, the behavior is the same with and without it:

  • Thunderbird 102.7.0 (64 bit)
  • Windows 10 22H2 (OS Buils 19045.2546)
