172215 - Download Manager reports strange filename when the target file is missing

The provided URL is unavailable. Click on it and wait for error message from
Download Manager. It will report something like 
'O:\TMP\yw6tma0t.EXE could not be saved, bla-bla-bla.'
It's very informative, isn't it? Reported filename is not related to the link at
all. It is very confusing and really hard to realize what this report is about.

Not sure if this is same bug, but with windows 95 (not 98), the current nightly
builds for a week or so are not able to download any file at all, and give the
error listed by the bug submitter. This occurs for both ftp and http downloads.

Just wanted to note that I've seen this problem when downloading files. I'm
using the 1.2 beta on W98.

I haven't tried it anywhere but sourceforge.net, but it's completely
reproducible. I can download the files fine using IE.

e.g., go to 

http://telia.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/filezilla/FileZilla_2_1_2_setup.exe

I get a message saying:

"c:\windows\temp\wt9y5610.exe could not be saved, because the source file could
not be read."

I believe this differs from bug 169276. The latter is Windows-specific and
related to valid links. This one in platform-independent and deals with links to
non-existing files.

So you're saying you'll get this message even if the file you're attempting to
download doesn't exist?

That is, same sort of error message, but different expected result (in one case
you expect a download, in this case you expect an error message, but a different
one)?

Recieving the same fault on the ["Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1;
en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021016" (1.2beta)] build.. Not sure what this depends on
but I can't open the Download Manager either so it's probably related to that in
some way.. Used to have a blank entry in the Download Manager aswell so I'm
gonna try a clean reinstall (since I just did a smackbang upgrade ontop of
1.1beta) and feedback to this thread again..

reinstallation solved the problem!!! so, this bug is probably just a problem

Manager: bug 155429 and bug 157062

Not mixing anything up here. This happened even when rightclicking, choosing
"Save as" on links I had produced on my own with my cgi-script.
http://mgroover.sytes.net/cgi-bin/link.pl?http://localhost/bogus.jpg for
instance.. This gave the exact same problem as with valid links..

But, as I wrote before, the problem solved itself by just uninstalling and
reinstalling.

Martin, the problem still persist here. Try to do exactly the following:

1. Click on link ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/test.bin
2. You'll get a message "550 /test.bin: bla-bla-bla". Click Ok.
3. You'll get a message like "O:\TMP\yw6tma0t.bin could not be saved,
bla-bla-bla." which is exactly the subject of this bugreport.

Does this happen on your side?

I am having problem trying to download as well - it doesn't matter whether it
exists on the system or not.

I can't get into Download Manager and when I click on Save As it does nothing.

I am using Mozilla 1.2b (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.2b)
Gecko/20021016. I upgrade my mozilla from 1.2a using the installer.

Sunny, likely your problem is resolved in bug 171441. Try to delete file
compreg.dat. The second candidate is bug 162271.

This bug deals with links to missing files only.

Mozilla now reports the exact error received from ftp server.
