WARNING: you're about to embark upon a bizarre and long bug report! Do not
attempt to digest while operating heavy machinery; may cause lacerations on the
retina; may cause IBS (irritable bowel syndrome: see
http://www.panix.com/~ibs/); may cause loss of energy, time and stress-free
afternoon; do not taunt this bug report; keep this report away from children,
the elderly, pregnant women, developing foetuses, clones, and those suffering
from Tourette's Syndrome.
This was marked critical b/c as I was entering this bug info (the first time)
and testing one of the quirks I outline below (specifically, I typed something
into the URL bar of the tabbed window that contained the unfinished bug report)
and instead of exhibiting the behavior I had experienced up until then (nothing
happening), the browser acted as if I had clicked on of the links in the page,
the status bar said it was connecting to bugzilla.... and instead of going to
the URL I was typing, I was shown a new, blank bugzilla helper form. :\
-----
I went to www.phish.com, clicked on "Click To Enter Official Phish Site" and a
new window opened. After looking around a bit, via flash navigation, I pressed
Ctrl+T to open a new tab, but nothing happened (i.e. no new tab). I clicked
File>New>Navigator Tab and instead of a tab, the current content area became
white. Under View>Show/Hide> "Tab Bar" is checked, but Tab Bar is hidden.
Pressing Ctrl+Up/Down navigates between the white, new (invisible) "tab" and the
original "Official Phish Site" tab. Pressing Ctrl+W on the white tab closes it
and you're left w/ the original phish tab. I went back to the original mozilla
window and began searching for a bug matching what I had just experienced.
While bugzilla was "working" I opened a new tab, iirc, and went to
http://www.hemp-products.org, clicked on the "Headshops" link, clicked the
"Frumdamental : Horticulture : Smart" link @ the bottom, right-clicked on the
"Buy Marijuana Legal Online Here" and opened in a new window. In this new
window, I noticed a blank toolbar above the content area. I Alt+Tabbed to
another window and was going to search for a bug on the blank toolbar, but
mozilla crashed.
Upon relaunching Mozilla, the new window had a "File Edit View..." menu bar and
the blank toolbar I had noticed on the new window created before the crash and
after I visited the popped-up phish site. Took screenshot, will attach. Notice
that the Navigation toolbar was not visible, although it had previously always
been shown on startup.
Next, I pressed Ctrl+T and a new blank, tabbed window appeared, disspelling the
thought that the blank toolbar was the Tab bar. Will attach screenshot.
Next, I clicked View>Show/Hide>Navigation Toolbar and it appeared, although it
was showing text, too when it was *supposed* to be showing pictures only. Will
attach screenshot.
Next, I went to Prefs>Appearance and verified that "Pictures only" was selected.
It was. Clicked OK. Text still showing w/ the buttons. Will attach screenshot of
prefs.
Next, I right-clicked on the blank toolbar and a context menu appeared. Will
attach screenshot. Select the "properties" brought up a dialogue box titled:
Properties for ""
I filled in Name, Keyword & Description fields and selected OK. Now, when I
right-click on the blank toolbar, I have different options: instead of "Open in
New Window" & then "New Folder..." I see "Open", "Open in New Window", "Open in
New Tab" & then "New Folder...". Will attach screenshot.
Now for the weird behavior (and you thought it was, already <- lol):
1) While typing into the URL bar, the autocomplete does not work, but it's still
turned on in the prefs.
2) As I'm typing into URL bar, the "Search Google for [what I'm typing]" option
does not appear. Will attach screenshot.
3) In a new, blank tab, while typing into the URL bar, after typing the 11th
character, "about:blank" appears under what I'm typing, with the "Search Google
for about:blank" option appearing below that(!?). Will attach screenshot. Once
the 12th character is typed, the cursor moves in front of the 12th character and
inserts new characters before the last typed character. I.e.: typing
1234567890123456789 will result in:
1234567890198765432, with the cursor still sitting before the 9(!?)
4) In the original tab, opened after the crash, no matter what I type, dots (.)
included, the "Search Google..." option doesn't appear until I reach the 72nd
character, after which the typing will be *inserted before* the last typed
character. I.e., typing
123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
will result in:
123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijzyxwvutsrqponmlk
5) Once that 72nd character has been typed, the "Search Google..." option is:
"Search Google for [whatever URL the current window is showing]". And above the
"Search Google..." option appears the URL of the current window. Will attach
screenshot.
6) In the orginial tabbed window, if I type into the URL bar & press enter,
nothing happens.
NOTE: before I lost the original bug report I was filing, I had managed to lose
keyboard navigation, as well. I had pressed Ctrl+T and in the new, blank tabbed
window I would type into the URL bar and press enter. Nothing would happen. I
would switch back to the first window, and the URL remained the same, only I
couldn't backspace to delete characters or use the arrow keys. I had even lost
arrow, Page Up, Page Down, Home & End key functionality in the main browsing
window and the text field I was typing the bug report into. After losing the
original report by trying to test #6 above (again) the keyboard navigation
returned. (!?)
7) Pressing Ctrl+N to open a new window brings up a fully functional window,
except it *still has* the blank "toolbar"!? Will attach screenshot.
8) Regarding the "blank toolbar", after filling in this data for the properties
of the "toolbar":
Name: bug erata
Keyword: crash bug blank toolbar
Description: this blank toolbar appeared after a crash
when I grab the toolbar and drag it, the crossed out circle appears except over
the URL bar and the tab bar and content area. If I drop it into the URL bar,
that currently says "helpme", and drop it after "helpme" this appears:
bug erata
But if I drop it somewhere before the end of "helpme" it'll appear like this:
bug eratame (if I drop it between the p & m)
bug erataelpme (if I drop it between the h & e)
8a) Following what I said about dropping the "blank toolbar" onto the URL bar
after the word helpme, if I drag it onto the URL bar again and drop it before
the "b" in bug, this appears:
bug eratabug erata
Consequential drops of the "blank toolbar" between any of the first 12
characters will result in the Name property (bug erata) in the URL bar's
contents followed by the rest of the character's that were present before
dragging the toolbar to the URL bar.
After repeatedly dragging the "toolbar" onto the URL bar and then backspacing to
erase the last incarnation inside the URL bar, instead of a blank URL bar, it
will be filled with whatever the last drag replaced...then after backspacing to
delete all of that, the it repeats...going all the way back to the original word
that was replaced by the drag operation: helpme(!?) Some invisible, hidden
history of what was in the URL bar exists.
8b) Once I've done the drag operation enough times so that 72 characters have
appeared on the URL (since the helpme right before beginning this process) and
begin hitting backspace to take off characters, I see the behavior of #5 even
until I backspace over all the characters in the hidden URL bar history.
8c) Continuing on this drag operation thread, once I've done it a few times I
can press the <- arrow key in the last incarnation of characters that appear in
the URL bar, and once I'm at the beginning of the current incarnation it will
take me to the end of the last incarnation and so on until I get to the first
word that was in the URL bar before I began the drag operation. Right arrowing
(is that a verb?) will take me forward to each newer incarnation until I reach
the latest incarnation of characters that were created by the drag operation.
sit back, enjoy the pictures, light up a good smoke and heed the warning @ the
beginning of this report! ;)
Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
are you kidding me? Did you see what I wrote up there ^ ??
See Talkback ID TB16527979Q for data on the crash I referenced. Also, I'm not
sure which component this bug falls into. ;)

I realized that the "blank toolbar" was actually my "Personal toolbar", which I
decided to hide the first time I ran mozilla. I never selected to show
it...must've happened in the crash. Fwiw, the personal toolbar in Bookmarks is
not empty, though. :\

The "blank toolbar" is definitely my Personal Toolbar, but it is blank and
unusable. I cannot drag favicons, bookmarks, links from a page or anything else
to it. Ctrl+N brings up a new window w/ the navigation toolbar rendered
correctly (i.e. no text) but the personal toolbar is still blank and
non-functional.

Any ideas on what I can do about this? I have uninstalled 1.3b, put a fresh 1.3
final on here and the personal toolbar is still blank, although it's available
from the bookmarks. I tried to make another profile and see if that was the
problem, but I cannot get mozilla to run on another profile, see bug 191872.

I'm using Mac OS X and often, the first window I open with recent nightlies
(including the OS X build from the morning of the 14th) has a blank personal
toolbar just like in screenshot 7. I close that one and open a new, and I get a
populated personal toolbar this time around and things seem to be normal.
I'm adding a comment to this bug instead of filing a new one because I think it
possible it's a related problem...

The original summary for this bug was longer than 255 characters, and so it was truncated when Bugzilla was upgraded. The original summary was:
blank, non-functional Personal Toolbar - after clicking a link that opened a new window without a navigation toolbar via javascript, then opening another window, then a crash, newly launched mozilla has a blank toolbar showing, keyboard navigation is crippled, URL bar is broken and navigation bar is shown incorrectly
