I haven't really looked a the gopher behavior in a long time, the last time I
looked was so long ago that I wasn't even working on Networking QA, so I put my
notes on my personal website.

This bug digest was referenced in some networking tests, and it needed to
reference a bug instead.

The stuff in that digest needs to get converted to an updated dependency tree in
bugzilla, when that is done, the URL should be deleted from the field.

Gopher is really broken now, in several ways:

1- Gopher links displayed in the gopher displays are messed up, they display the
current URL as the base, bug 184180. This makes all gopher directories unusable.

2- Gopher has always lacked decent error handling, like connection establishment
timeout and hostname not found, but the more recent 1.3x behavior is to display
an index/html page w/ no entries.

3- Gopher space seems to be disappearing at an astonishing rate. The original
gopher server at U of Minn seems to be gone, after months of lousy uptime. There
was a "gopher manefesto" published, to save gopher. Not only could it not find a
gopher server to host the file, but the web site is now gone as well.

Right now, I'm looking for a new gopher site for my networking smoke tests.

Perhaps we should think about taking this out of the trunk. I've marked the
relevant bugs for 1.4a so that we can start thinking about the seriousness of
this problem. If this were a commercial feature, I'd be failing it as QA.

gopher://gopher.tc.umn.edu is still up.
gopher://gopher.publication.org.uk is my personal site, and pretty stable.
gopher://gopher.floodgap.com is ptloma.edu's site
gopher://gopher.quux.org has lots of resources

That's just off the top of my head. You can find more links from those.
I for one would really like to see Gopher support fixed, it is very irritating
to keep having to switch to Netscape 4 when I want to browse Gopher sites.

Then _VOTE_ for this bug
(http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/votes.cgi?action=show_user&bug_id=194220). And get
all your friend, enemies, etc. to vote for it, too (but: usually mozilla.org
people don't care about bugzilla votes except you break the "50 votes" barrier
(100 are better)) ... :)
Thomas:
umn seems to be always down for me, so I'm going to start using your site as my
home gohper site for my network core tests (I try to smoketest each major
protocol handler).

If you need to take it down in the future, please let me know.
